if not that then the Phantom.
Rangers lead the way!

Phantoms are less expensive and about 95-99 percent as effective as a Vortex.
Vortex has more CDI factor.
Vortex is harder to permanent attach because it takes carbide drills to break through the case hardening.

If you sent the barrel to my shop, looking at $50 for a permanent attached Phantom or $80 for a permanent attached Vortex.

For a M4 barrel, I vote for the Phantom or for a more traditional look the Sabre Defence long A2 FS from Talon Arms.

I prefer the Vortex for my next precision rifle build because of it's slightly better accuracy performance than the Phantom.

The Vortex would be a good choice too if you will be using it with a compatible sound suppressor later on.

I have both the Phantom 5C1 and 5C2 models.

Phantom for me (I prefer the one Bushmaster sells without the closed bottom port) - cheaper than Vortex and just as effective IME.

Thanks Guy's...I think I'm Gonna go with the Talon Long A2. Just to keep it Traditional

You can do the KAC M4QD f/h with a crush washer as well.

Chicks Dig It.

A very important consideration!

I vote for Vortex too though ... they're amazing FHs.

That is not a bad choice, but I would be more concerned with performance than traditional looks.  To each his own.

That's the JP Tank Brake.
It's the most effective muzzle brake you can buy.
Not legal in some competetions due to the size.
If your rifle is not heavy enough, that brake will almost make it recoil forwards.

+1

What a great way to make it even louder!  That brake only looks good to me on a competition rifle (or maybe an AR-30 in .338 Lapua).  This thread is about flash hiders, not brakes.

either a troy brake or a 5C2....in other words get the most evil looking break you can

it's for the children

honestly i'd just go w/ a 5c1 or 5c2....you'll save money

CDI is also know as the Cool Device Index for those who dont care if chicks dig it or not. The more cool devices your rifle has on it the higher the CDI factor of your gun.

I actually used this Pre-drilled Vortex Kit when I replaced my Y-Comp.  I had a buddy of mine hit the top of each pin with some weld and it turned out pretty good.  If you're a do it yourself kind of guy, it's an option.

Some strange things I noticed after I installed my Vortex:

1. Accuracy was better.  (Not by much.)  Before I installed the vortex, the tightest group I could ever get out of the 14.5" bbl was 3MOA.  Afterwards, it shot 2MOA.  (Maybe the y-comp wasn't perfectly aligned to the bore?)

2. The vortex rings like a tuning fork.  So every time I chamber a round, or fire, I hear a slight ringing.  (Bone conduction through my jaw, I’m thinking.)

3. The vortex is a very effective flash suppressor.  I see zero flash, even when shooting inside on dark runs.

4. The vortex doesn't work as a muzzle brake at all.  Even a plain old A2 will keep the nose of the rifle down because of the closed bottom.  The vortex feels next to identical to my Dads 16" AR that has a bare muzzle.  After shooting so long with a Y-comp, the muzzle rise was very noticeable.

Just one pin at 6 o'clock.  If you look closely between the two rings, the ring in the middle has a very small tit sticking out at 6 o'clock.  This is where the blind pin is.

I have used the Vortex exclusively on M4 barrels since '98 with no issues.  That said, USMC03's Sabre/Talon may go on my next barrel.
