Almost finished with the lower (MagPul needs to send me the stock and I'm done) and I just ordered the barrel on my first build.  Which jig is the best for the job?

I could order a barrel vice which would be perfect for securing the flash hider and keeping things still while I install the gas block but what about the upper receiver?  Will it suffice?

On the other hand, I could either get the DPMS jig for the upper, or a clam shell version like what Brownell's sells but if I go to torque the barrel or install and torque the flash hider, I could make alignment a little bit weird (don't want to end up with a rear BUIS adjusted completely to one side).

So which would you get?  The upper receiver clamp?  The barrel vice?  Both?  Why?

Thanks for everyone's help!

Minimum torque for the barrel nut is 30 ft.lbs. and you'll probably go above that.  Flash hiders are at 20 ft.lbs.  You should not be able to overcome a +30 ft.lb. barrel nut installing a flash suppressor.  Just get the clam shell.

am i wrong or what? we used an aluminum bbl vise insert and did all the work from there. it worked out for the entire upper build. So.....

s I understand it for installing a new barrel you should ALWAYS use an upper receiver holder since you risk the possibility of cracking your upper just using straight up barrel vises.

But on the flip side, I have been told you should use barrel vises for installing muzzel devices.  Yet, my first build I had no barrel vise jaws, and just used my Upper jig with no problems.  Then I went and bought barrel vise jaws for my latest build so I could "use the right tool"....problem is the mid length SPR profile of my barrel, and the fact I am using a free float handguard left me with too little space to use the barrel vise jaws which were too long and would not have allowed me to screw my uzzel device on.  So again I just used my Upper jig.

So I guess my vote would be to get the Upper receiver holding jig and be content with that.
