I am thinking of getting a low powered variable optic to replace my Eotech. I am looking at the Burris XTR II 1-5x, Steiner 1-4x, SWFA 1-6x. I'm open to suggestions. It'll probably end up on a 16" LaRue Stealth upper. I don't want to go too crazy, maybe around 1k for the scope and mount.

Mainly just target shooting but I'd like something nice for SHTF.

For SHTF the Steiner and it's unbelievably overbuilt and rugged.  The glass quality is amazing and you're really getting a $1,800-ish piece of glass on the cheap.  4X will get you out to 500 yards on a two-legged sized target.

That being said, the Burris is also excellent and it's my primary 3-gun optic.

I started a thread a while back with essentially the same question. Folks here convinced me to try the Steiner from Eurooptics. It'll be here later today, so I will let you know.

How important is weight?  Some low powered scopes are downright portly for no good reason.  The VX-R Patrol is only 11.5 ounces.  Mil/mil with motion activated illuminated Firedot that can be daylight noon time bright.

I wrote an article for our website comparing the Leupold Mk6 1-6x, Vortex Razor HD 1-6x, Bushnell 1-6.5x, and Burris XTR II 1-5x if you were interested. Here is the URL

Tried one and I was let down.  No daylight visible illumination.

Honestly.... I think the Patrol is the single most under-rated optic out there and it's quickly become my favorite all around optic for practical use.

It's so, SO close to being perfect.  If it were just a true 1X and had a little different reticle it'd be my first choice for 3-Gun.  Even with the 1.25X bottom end though, it doesn't really slow you down more than a fraction of a second.

I wish I had some experience with the first two...but I do have the SWFA.  I love the reticle, and it tracks true. A bit heavy though.  You may want to go with a lightweight non-qd mount to make up a few ounce with that scope

I have a Burris MTAC 1-4 on my 3 gun rifle and there is a LOT to like about that optic.  It's fairly lightweight, has capped turrets, very usable brightness selector, and a very, very fast reticle.

The downsides are that the glass may not be quite as spectacular as some other choices, and that very fast reticle is an aid to fast shooting, not precise shooting.  It's accurate enough for 3-gun matches, but the center dot is a bit over 2MOA - very difficult to use if you're trying to print sub-MOA groups at 100 yards.

I'm currently building another 3 gun rifle and I think this one may be wearing the Vortex Razor HD II 1-6.  I'd like a bit more illumination, and the tiny center dot may make precision shooting a bit more doable.  We'll see if the lack of big red donut slows me down...

Yup. I wish the stadia weren't in 2.5 mils but oh well. The 1.25 like you said is close enough.
