Of the muzzle devices I've listed which do you think I should go with? I'm putting together a target upper using a WOA SS Match bbl. I want to minimize recoil and I'm not concerned with flash suppression. I also don't paln any rapid fire shooting. Please post your advice or experience with anything listed. If there's something I missed, please post your suggestions. PRI/MSTN Quiet Control JP/Ben Cooley Smith Enterprises Miculek Ops, Inc |

hey edwin907 how much louder is the mstn brake over a bare muzzle? here's a thread with some intresting comments on the mstn brake |
I usually use electronic muffs, and it seems a little louder, but I usually get more "comments" about the sound of Q3131A out of a 14.5"/Phantom, than I do about 75 grain TAP out of the 18"SS/QC brake. The only direct comparison I have done showed it was considerably quieter than the "tank" brake another shooter was using on a 18" SPR. More importantly, in that same comparison, admittedly non-scientific, the QC brake equipped rifle did seem to have less movement, mostly less "hop" on the bipod from a concrete bench. Being able to take a shot, then watch bullet impact at 15X on the Nightforce scope is great fun! |
thanks im finally off to shoot the rifle i built |
Any links?
Thanks. That's the type of information I'm looking for. |

Glad to get your comments on the brake. I find it is really at home on the 18"SS barrel of my MRP, but the advantage there is that I can swap it out for the 16"SS/Vortex any time I want! But with the weight of the 18" barrel, the brake's effectiveness is impressive as compared to the 16"/Vortex combination. I usually shoot with ProEars Dimension 3 muffs, and I don't find the noise objestionable at all, but like I said, it does seem a little louder. A question, did you notice any POI shift with the brake, versus the Vortex? |
|
there was slight shift to the right but i was still in the 10 ring on the target but i expected that since the vortex just tightens down on the bbl and the mstn uses the crush washer. i would imagine that there would be less muzzle rise with the 18" due to the heavier bbl. but i agree it the brake does its job. this is my first rifle with a muzzle brake so thats probably why i cant stand the noise that and the fact that all the other people shooting next got up and left. ![]()

Thanks. Looks likje I'm leaning towards the MSTN brake. One more question. If anyone knows, how does the muzzle blast volume compare to a 7.62 FAL with a DSA muzzle brake? That's the only other rifle I have with a brake. I get some mild comments about the sideways directed blast from neighboring shooters when I shoot it at the range. |
dont know how it compares to the fal but i did get some mild to rude comments about the muzzle blast from neighboring shooters at the range when i shot mine. |
