I just finished building a 14.5" M4 and I want an optic to go with it.  What are your opinions on the following

Eotech 512
Eotech 551
Aimpoint ML3

This is only going to be used at the range.  Mostly at 50-100 yards, but may go 200-300

From your list  - ML3.

I highly recommend the Aimpiont T-1 though.

EoTech's still have issues with thier battery boxes. For a range gun it is not a big deal but I like all my gear to be GTG all the time.

I've been using a Aimpoint CompML2 and a CompML3. A few weeks back I used a friend's AR with a 512 equipped and I picked up the reticle quicker and follow up shots were quicker. I recently sold my ML3 for a 512 and I am happy. The only advanatge the Aimpoint has is battery life. But all the Eotech's advantages make it well worth it. And it is my understanding that only the N-battery powered Eotechs have the short battery life problem.

I got tired of waiting for the EoTech XPS 2-2, so I got an EoTech 516, I wanted a 517, but what I've read the 516 is just as good.

Supposedly the versions that use the AA battery box does NOT have as many problems or short batter life either.  The 516 is one of the latest version on sale, and it has a new variant on the battery box that uses a set of CR123 batteries (Photo/LED Flashlight Batteries).  It has a new mounting pad, that is curved up under the battery compartment, so it can be mounted over the standard handguard if you need that.  If you look hard enough, you can find a 516 or 517 for only a little more than a 512.

The EoTech XPS 2-2 or the NVG version 3-2, has a totally different batter box using the photo battery CR123.  You'd "think" that would fix the problems, but we really won't know until they come up and some people get some experience with them.  What I really liked, the XPS -2 version has a reticle with two aiming dots, the 2nd like a dozen moa lower.  So, you have a close in and a long range aim point, depending on how you zero it, it would work better for close in shooting and then some 300 yrd plus shooting.  Thing is, EoTech is doing the Microsoft Marketing of hyping it up months before delivery and then caging about when they will actually ship, you may be waiting till September before you can get one.

I've never been a big fan of scopes and the length of time for target acquisition, it might be because I never gave them a chance and really got used to them.  I plink and target shoot at close range, which an EoTech would be fine, but worry when I try for 300yrds plus the EoTech might be worthless.

I just looked up the 517, and it fit the bill, and price.  Just ordered one from opticsbestbuy.com  We will see how they are, it was 429 with free shipping.  They seemed to have good reviews online.  Hopefully they are GTG

I just swapped from an EOTech 512 to an Aimpoint Comp ML3 in a Larue cantilever mount.  I like the reticle of the EOTech, but prefer the longer battery life of the ML3.  YMMV.

Aimpoint ML-3  with LaRue or American Defense Cantilever Mount Or M4.  An Eotech is not as versatile as an Aimpoint Period.  Not only is battery life an issue but that donut at 200+ yards will be a real pain.  I would consider a Trijicon Reflex before an Eotech.

Any Aimpoint model with the corresponding Larue mount.  I have an ML2 on a LT150 mount and a Comp C3 with a Larue LT150 on the way.  I tried the Aimpoint T1 and that would be my next optic purchase (on a LT mount of course).

Well worth it.  They are far more reliable.

Not much more than you paid for the ET, comes with the mount. I have the 2 MOA setup and like it. The AD QD mount is solid and retains zero when removed and replaced.

EOTech 512 or even a 511. I've got a Mako 3X Magnifier that works as well as EOTech's 3X AT 1/4 the Price. Helps to have good Eye Sight with a Red Dot. I see 5 or 6 Dots with Mine.
I just pick one Dot and Stick with it.

Keep your eye on the EE for Aimpoint and Mount combo. I just picked up a LNIB Aimpoint C3 with Larue LT-150 mount for $425.

From that list it has to be a 512 or ML3. You choose.
