Just finished assembling my first AR. Gunsmith at my LGS looked it over to insure I did everything correctly and said it's good to go. For my first range trip I will focus on 2 things, setting the adjustable gas block and zeroing the scope. Which ammo is the consensus for this. Let me add that my range does not allow fmj ammo.

Rifle details- Aero Precision upper with Green Mountain 223 Wylde 18" fluted barrel, JP adjustable gas block, AIM NiB bolt carrier group, Spike's lower with standard lpk and Timney 3lb single stage trigger, and a Vortex Strike Eagle scope. Thanks!

Find a different range.

Wolf gold 55gr FMJ is the best value in M193-type ammo.

Soft point or hollow point ammo is going to be harder to acquire in large quantities, due to extra cost and lower availability.

Are you sure it's that your range doesn't allow steel cased/bi metal bullet ammo (Tula/Wolf/etc)?

50 grain Federal JHP is available @ around 40 cents per round + shipping at the ammunition store.

No fmj, that is odd, might I ask what range it is?

I am also curious if your range allows steel cased ammo... and not being able to shoot FMJ seriously eliminates about 85% of your inexpensive choices... arrgh.

None the less..... if they do allow steel cased ammo... I would try some Hornady 75gr Steel Match, IMHO it is a great, inexpensive round.

Make sure your rifle likes it ( accuracy wise ) prior to buying a case.

Next, if they don't allow SC ammo.... I would try Priv Partizan SP .223, maybe PMC SP .223 ( low-powered though, so adjust the GB as needed )... Fed. 50gr Tipped Varmint is a inexpensive accurate 100yd round, and the price just keeps going up from there.

Will typically you want to set the gas block to function reliably with the lightest loads you shoot.

55grain SPs can be had for a decent price if you look around.

Where in TX are you? I'm sure you can find a better range.

I'm in Dallas and the range is Elm Fork. I've looked at a couple other ranges in the area and they have poor reviews and/or the same no fmj rule. There are others but they are not close. I'm certainly open to suggestions. It's disappointing as I have a small pile of .223 55g fmj already.

only 10 rounds in mag, only 1 shot per second.

Looks like a suck place even if they did allow fmj.

could just be someone (at the range) mis interpretation of FMJ.. my local indoor range says " NO STEEL CASE AMMO"  well after seeing alot of steel cases lying around I asked, they said steel case was OK not steel core bullets... they were unsure of the difference  it might help to ask, I'm sure if others are shooting AR's at that range they are using FMJ...
back OT.. I sighted in my new rifle with federal 55gr FMJ then went to some 62gr FMJ, I won't be shooting anything heavier than that.

This is the only thing I can think of... That or they lost their mind and expect everyone to fire frangibles or something. Nor wanting people to shoot steel core, or "armor piercing" is one thing, no FMJ... I would be driving further.

At the DNR range near me, it's only 6 rounds / mag and 3 seconds between rounds. I always load 30 rounds but they do hold to the 3 second rule. No targets that resemble a human, only animal or circular bullseye targets. Also, no steel tip ammo even though the berm backstop  is sand.

damn, I live in the people' s republic of NJ comrade and even we don't have that kind of bs rules.  You are in Texas, can't believe Texans allow that $hit  :)

Misread the title. Thought it said "which ammo FORT first".

Dallas County has some strange rules at times. OP, go east. there are 2 ranges outside Rockwall. Check them out I would bet at least one of them has no restriction on FMJ. I can't vouch for any of these, but a phone call is cheap.

Ranges

Good Luck

As for ammo, I'm not aware of many SP working all that well with an AR. There are exceptions, like Gold Dot, Fusion, and maybe Winchester PSX1, but other than the GD I can't say, and these are not plinking rounds. Good to excellent for SD, though.
