How do I tell what buffer I have?  There are absolutely no markings anywhere on the buffer.  It is a light gold color.
I think I need a heavier buffer... I'm getting a case head swipe problem which I believe can be remedied by slowing the ejection down a bit.       How much does a standard buffer weigh, a H1 or H2 etc... also?
ETA:  My electronic postal scale says my buffer weighs 5.1Oz.
ETA  ETA:  I forgot to mention that this buffer is in a A2 stock.

you7 have a standard rifle buffer   in the case of a 6 position stock the carbine buffer is 3oz a heavy is close to 4oz  ,

if your running steel ammo that may be a problem till you get it broken in. some will run it after 100 or more rounds have been run threw them. or you can use a chamber brush and a drill and go to town.

What you have is an A1/A2 rifle length buffer which is meant for rifle length receiver extensions.

Their is only one type/weight A1/A2 rifle length buffer.

The rifle length buffer weighs more than a carbine, H, & H2 buffer.

Carbine, H, & H2 buffers are meant for carbine length receiver extensions.

Carbine=3.0oz, H=3.8oz, H2=4.6oz, H3=5.4oz, & rifle=5.2oz

OK, thanks for the explanation..    I do indeed have a rifle length upper with a A2 lower.  It appears that I have the correct combination.  What do you think I can do with this setup to slow or delay the ejection/bolt unlocking process?  Heavy duty spring?

Extra tension  recoil spring will slow down unlock/cycle (wolff springs),

And for the record, do not install a shorter type carbine buffer in a standard length butt stock receiver extension (at least not without a space to take up the needed depth).

The main purpose the buffer foremost, is that it  allows the bolt face to clear the back of the bolt catch, and at the same time, limits out the bolt face to just a hair in front of the back of the ejection port rearward.

If you install a shorter than needed buffer ( front face of the bolt clears the back of the ejection port on rearward cycle), then the back of the carrier key crashes into the back of the upper receiver at full rearward stroke; ending with a cracked lower receiver from the carrier key impacts to the lower receiver at tube threaded section.

A rifle length upper and lower is the optimal configuration.

Do you have any pictures that you can post of the brass, so we can get an idea of whats going on

and if it is even a problem. If you cannot post pics, try and explain what is going on in more detail.

What type of ammo are you shooting.

When is the last time you scrubbed your chamber with a chamber brush.

It could just be your chamber is dirty causing the cases to stick a little in the chamber during extraction.

Try scrubbing your chamber with a chamber brush & solvent and see what happens.

The marks could just be from a sharp/strong extractor.

Sorry, but no pictures but I searched the internet and found a pic that is just what I have.
Just in case this didn't imbed properly, here is the link... (long link)

I hope you can see the pic.  From what I understand, this swipe occurs because the bolt begins to rotate to unlock while the brass is still locked in the chamber by the expansion/pressure.  If I retard the unlocking just a little so the pressure will begin to drop, things should be fine.   Right???

I scrub the chamber with a proper chamber brush after every range trip.  I'm kind of anal when it comes to cleaning my guns.
I'm using new Federal xm855 and xm193

ETA:  Why didn't the picture imbed?  I clicked on the picture icon, copied the link into the source field.  What am I missing?

We need a photo of your spent base to see what is going on, and not a photo of someone else problem instead.

Sorry, I have no photo yet, but the pic I posted looks exactly like what I have.  But let's not concentrate so much on my lack of photo but on the issue of slowing down the bolt unlocking.

So far, I have a suggestion for a heavier spring from Wolf Spring.  Any other ideas?

What about opening up my buffer and swapping a weight for a heavier one?  Is this a reasonable solution?

Photo you listed is not a unlock problem, but the round going over pressure.

If I had to take a stab at the photo listed, either hand loaded too hot, or in the case of factory ammo, 5.56 Nato spec load in a chamber that as chamber 223 Rem, instead of the slightly more roomer 5.56 Nato chamber.

I am working on getting an actual photo to post but my photography skills are lacking.  I've only recently learned how to post a photo, now I need to learn how to host a photo so I can link to it.

Do you know why we can't just upload a photo from our PCs?

Free photobucket account to host your photo's, then you can link the photo from there to here,
such as below.

And yes, both are NM rigs and print Sub MOA.
