I have been reading and reading on this forum for a while.  I now know that i can get more than just a .223 in the AR's.  I have a RRA stripped lower and i am slowly building my rifle.  This will be my first AR and i am not sure on what caliber i should build.  I can pick up 7.62 ammo cheaper than i can get 5.56.  I am not precision shooting with this gun.  It is going to be an open sights gun or a hollow sights.  Any input would be helpful.

BY 7.62 DO YOU MEAN 7.62X39?

if so I would say go for that if you are sure you can secure magazines and spare parts NOW !

otherwise I would say get the 5.56 model.

the mags are way easier to find, spare parts (bolt) is easier to find, and the ammo is domestic.

if obammy decides to ban import ammo, your ammo could dry up overnight. unless you stock up over 10,000 rounds this month or next.

seriously, 5.56 is just fine for a defensive caliber, our military has been using it for over 30 years. don't believe the hype that it won't stop someone. yes it's possible, just like any other caliber anything is possible.

what ever you decide, get at least 15 mags, and a complete  spare lower parts kit and Bolt. then buy ammo for as long as it's available until you can't.

then take a training course.

wait on the accessories for a while, scopes, red dots and flashlights are not even on the radar of the bans.

get what will be in danger first , mags, ammo and spare parts first, then accessories last.

Build a 5.56 rifle first.  Then get into different calibers as you go later.
