I'm looking at getting a Magpul Vertical Grip. My upper has the MOE hand guards on it but I plan to upgrade to a free-float rail later. I'm guessing I can get the rail mounted grip now w/ the rail section that way I can use it on my FF rails later. Am I correct in getting the railed version instead of the MOE special version? I can mount the rail section on the MOE grip correct? How does it look with the rail? Has anyone else done this?
Here's the rail version: http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG412/39
And the MOE version: http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG413/39

If you don't plan on buying a rail for your gun in the next six months, just get the forward grip made to mount to the moe handguards. When you buy and install your rail, buy a new forward grip from magpul and sell the moe hg mounted version on the Equipment Exchange.

Great advice.. on the last post.

Or you could get 1 railed adapter for the MOE.  Don't think they are expensive.  Then you get the railed type.

If you go to a quad rail then you just swap the handle over and sell the MOE with the rail section..... but either option suggested will work.

If you are planning to upgrade to a FF soon I would get the RVG and not the MVG.  The RVG comes with a very short rail, with screws, to specifically mount it to the MOE hand guard (you will not need to buy anything).  The RVG will sit slightly lower than the MVG due to the rail mount but it isn't bad at all.  I understand why you are asking this (I did the same same thing with a MOE hand guard I have) and I think you are correct in leaning towards the RVG. IMHO

Edited to add pic: you'll notice that it sits a bit lower but that there is not any addition rail sticking out (magpul even includes a FDE rail for their FDE grip).  I personly run my middle finger in the contoured upper portion of the grip, my index finger on the hand guard between the grip and the front had stop, and I place my thumb on top between the two furthest forward vent holes.  I personally find that to be very comfortable and can find my had placement very quickly without having to look down.

Thanks guys that answered my question. I don't plan on getting a FF anytime soon but I do like the MOE w/ rail. I will go with the RVG. @lockandload: I will probably hold mine with my hand around the grip but have my index finger sticking up on the handguard for a flashlight tailcap switch.

One more thing you may want to do with your MOE hand guard:  Take a roll of duct tape and cut a couple thin pieces to lay inside the hand guard where is holds onto the barrel nut (I actually used 2 pieces for both the top and bottom).  This might sound a little red neck, using duct tape on your riffle, but it will make your hand guard very solid.  I like the feel of the MOE but am very anal and the little bit of wiggle really bothered me. I used the DT to fill some of the gap and now it is rock solid and you can't see anything from the outside
