I want to add a quad rail to my M4.  What do I do?  Add a carbine rail with a gas block and flip up sight?  Or, do I add a low profile gas block with a midlength rail and the put the flip up sights on the rail?

My AR is a RRA entry tactical and looks like the following:

Use a 7.0 or a 9.5 fsp, which has a cutout for running the A2 up through the rail. Your only other option is having the gas block shaved and mounting something over it. You should consider the gas block an integral part of the barrel.

Isn't that the purpose of the low profile gas block?  To fit underneath the rail?

I'm wanting to get rid of the fixed frontpost in exchange for flip-up sights.

That is the purpose of a low-profile gas block. I'm not a fan of railed gas blocks, I'd rather have the gas block completely shrouded by the rail and mount the front sight on the handguard.

Which rail would you recommend?

Since you want to get rid of your FSB I'd recommend a DD Lite rail. Length is up to you, a longer rail will give you a longer sight radius, but will also add more weight. You have to find the happy medium that fits your own needs.

My point is that unless the gas block and the barrel are drilled at the same time, you can't rely on them being indexed properly. As far as I am concerned, they are a unit, never to be seperated or replaced.

Totally agree. Besides it is way cheaper (free actually) to cut down FSB. There is a great tutorial on this site. Build it yourself section I believe. I cut another down the other day. It took about 30 minutes. It says to take FSB off barrel, but I have never removed one. just be careful not to rub the barrel with the rotary tool. I use a roto zip, cuts through like butter.

Will try to get some pics of mine shortly.

I dremmeled down my Front sight and painted it with high temp spray paint to fit under my 10" Troy FF rail.
