I am new to AR's, so I speak from the position of a novice.  I recently bought a new Stag Mod 2 with a 1/9 twist.  I am very impressed!  With open sights, I did very well with this rifle.  Now, I am interested in buying an additional upper.  Maybe another .223 or maybe a 6.8.  I will have $550 to spend.  However, any new upper will be scoped and used for hunting.  What is the best advise on brand, configuration, etc.within my budget?  Thanks

If you've got money burning a hole in your pocket - Why not spend the $$ on a QD scope / mount and more ammo instead? Practice, practice, practice.

build one  a white oak barrel in 1X7  and are wylde chambered, the rest is up to your preference's ,i got a troy trx hand guard and it feels real slim  nice

if you go with a white oak get the fluted option other wise that barrel is real heavy

A good scope with clean optics will cost all of you have in savings. I like Leupold scopes and the mounts will be $50-100 dollars more. Then you can go with Larue removable mounts with will set you back $200 bucks or so, but they are the best out there.

To answer your actual question as opposed to going off on a tangent...

RRA makes decent quality stuff.  In terms of quality, I personally rank them mid-level...between entry-level DPMS stuff (not to pick on DPMS) and the multitude of high end manufacturers.

I am about to place an order for some RRA stuff myself so my money is indeed where my mouth is.

6.8 is a good hunting caliber as it 6.5 Grendel but methinks those variants are going to get you back a lot more than $550.

Agreed, Larue makes the ultimate in optics mounts.  Even Larue mounts need to be lapped however, always remember that.

If you will be hunting deer and hog sized animals get a 6.8 upper.  I can give you a lead on Stag 7 upper, the seller is asking 500+shipping.

What are you hunting?  If you're hunting medium-sized game like deer, I'd go for 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC.

I appreciate the input.  Good solid advise so far.  BTW, which optic can I use with the model 2 that I have (front sight post in the way)?  I will look into the White Oak barrels, but want to hear more.

Whatever optic you want.  At lower powers with some scopes, you might get some ghosting, but you should still be fine, especially with something like a 3-9x.

RRA Predator Pursuit is a good bet. WOA is another.

get what you want,

but word of advice. I love my 6.5 grendel, wouldn't trade it for the world. but ammo is expensive as hell, as it will be with any weapon that there is no mil surp ammo for. if you load your own, maybe you'll be ok, but different brands use different size primers for it so that is another issue with testing loads ect... unless you use all the same brand of brass, and availability can be an issue with that.

just thought I would mention it cause you said you were on a budget.

FWIW - WOA is real close to me here in IL. Based on what couple guys who work there say - most barrel work is farmed out to Compass Lake Engineering in FL. They have a site, check them out and likely save a few $$.
