....and/or less expensive? I have a post-ban A2 but with an SP1 barrel. I would like to make it back into no-ban with an SP1 bbl to keep it light. So, there are two issues--removing a muzzle brake to put on a FS and replacing the sight base with an uncut one to restore the bayonet lug. For the muzzle brake, I can dremmel down the pin, heat the solder, and maybe remove it with the bbl threads in tact. Worst case, cut and rethread the bbl and have a bbl that would be too short to use the bayo lug even though, with the below work, it would hopefully have one. For the sight base, it must be removed and replaced, after the brake is removed. Who would have an SP1 sight base anymore? This would require some careful drilling for the taper pins to align them with the existing notches in the bbl. So, which would be less expensive in the long run: the above work or finding a new complete 1:12" bbl with sight base and just replace the whole thing? I would probably have a 'smith do this, not me. Should I just replace the brake and give up on the bayo lug? thanks |

I would imagine that replacing the bbl as a whole would not only be cheaper, but much less of an ass ache. You can purchase an action block and a bbl wrench and complete the whole project yourself and still be money ahead. There are shipping/insurance charges also. It may take a while for a smith to complete the project due to all the mods and requests that are being performed right now. Don't skimp. Although you will only use the bayo lug for asthetic purposes, it will probably end up bugging you for as long as you own the rifle. If you're going to go---go all out! |

Unless you try to sell the barrel to cover the cost to buy a new one, it will be less hassle to have it done by one of the qualified smiths on this site. Check out Kurt's Kustom and ADCO... KKF for example has a "no-ban special" going on right now:
Sounds like "Removal of brake and re-establishing threads-$45/labor" is a definite, then either "'Add-a-Lug' to your neutered A2 A-Frame-$35" (which is what I'd do since it's mostly for looks anyway) or " Installation of A2 A-frame front sight base-$75 parts/labor" if you can't stand the thought of the 'add-a-lug'. Sure, that costs money, but think about removing and selling your barrel, WHICH you won't get premium $$$ for because it's a post-ban (most anyone else who buys it will have to have it fixed too so they'll want a deal) then you have to find a new one and have it installed as well... |
