Why are uppers with removable handles called A3 uppers? Didnt the M16A3 still have a fixed handle and the removable handle not added until the M16A4?

Civilian AR15s have no FA capabilities, (NFA weapons aside) hence the military differences between the A3 and A4 are a moot point when one is talking semi-auto ARs.

Why does Daniels Defense have both A3 and A4 uppers shown on their ordering page?  And they look like the identical item.  Maybe one is "t-numbered" or "M4" ramped and the other is not, but their descriptions don't mention that IIRC.
