Why do some manufacturers like LMT & CMMG make nearly all their barrels in 1/7 twist? I'm guessing to adhere as close as possible to mil-spec. The reason I ask is: I know that the military like the 1/7 to stabilize the long tracer bullets. But we civies don't shoot so much of the tracers, mostly the 55 gr. & 62 gr. surplus stuff. How well will the 1/7 work w/ these bullets?

Jim

This has been a subject of endless debate on this forum.

Plainly stated the 1:7 does everything the 1:9 does and also handles the heaviers bullets.

Why are all of these threads titled "why 1/7", etc.? Why not ask "why 1/9?"

And a +4.

"Why not?"

You can shoot everything a 1/9 can shoot, and more.  Some say the barrel wears faster.  I'll worry about that once I shoot one of my 1/7s smoothe.

Why not have a barrel that will shoot everything but the thinnest jacketed varmint bullets without a problem?  1-7 is the best choice for the selection of bullets available today.

So what if it won't shoot 40 grain TNT's well?  If you wanna shoot 4 legged varmints, get a varmint gun in 1-12  If it's for 2 legged varmints, 1-7 is a good choice with 77 grain ammo.

I've shot a number of 40gr loads thru a 1:7 20".

The only problems I had was some midflight jacket failures from some of the (long) discontinued Federal blitz.

That said I dont see a need for those (now) even when shooting varmits - the 52gr Hornady work fine

The guys above pretty much nailed the "Why" of the 1/7 twist.

One of the mods should tac one of the 1/7 vs 1/9 threads...

Thank you for sharing info.  I do understand why manufacturers would go with the 1/7 twist.  Please know that I was only seeking explanation/info, I was not trying to start a 1/9 vs. 1/7 or flame the 1/7.  Thanks again.
