I have AR's with regular free float tube handgaurds and with free floating Quad Rails.  I think the quad rails look cool as shit.  I also like it to mount my bipod to it for precision shooting.  Other than a Bipod or a light, though what is the purpose?  They are heavier than a regular tube handgaurd and so many people I see with pictures of AR's have nothing but covers on them.

Not trying to open a can of worms or start a pissing contest here, so please keep it civil, but what do YOU prefer and why?

Poll Inbound if I can figure out how.

Like you said, you can add lights, vertical FG, lasers, etc.  It makes your rifle modular if thats what you need.

Getting the rails the first time give you room for future additions without having to change the handguards.

Not always heavier than plastic handguards.

Also, I prefer some rail covers because I get a better grip on the weapon when wet, vs. the relatively slick plastic handguards. That said, I still have ARs with plastic handguards.

i personally like them all as far as comfort goes, im comfortable with a set of standard HG's but with any non FF forend i cant stand POI shifts. so all my AR's get a free floating forend, and depending on the purpose of the rifle decides whether its just a FF tube, or a FF rail.

I have no need or wants for stuff hanging on my forearm.

I have a tube for my 3-Gun carbine and tubes for my bench rifles.

That is it.

I am brand new to this forum and a new AR-15 owner.  Is there an advantage to having free-float handguards?

On a carbine, with no optics mounted on the handguards, no.

On a rifle, or a weapon used to shoot the tiniest groups possible, or a carbine with optics/lasers mounted on the handguard, yes.

yes, more accurate and you dont have a POI shift like you do with a non FF when you tighten up on the sling, or tighten upon the VFG (if you have one). i have one that the POI changes 12" at 100 yards when i tighten the sling up. a free float mounted sling is where its at.

All I want is a VFG, and maybe a point to install a flashlight for things that go bump in the night.

I'm a minority here.  I'd rather have a lightweight free float tube with a short rail to two right where I want them.

Something is wrong with your weapon.

very. why then by your explanation can i tighten my sling a very large amount, i.e my arm is going numb and shoot accurately with iron sights at 500 yards?
