the quality of USGI magazines for the AR-15/M16 is so different from that of 1911 magazines?  USGI 1911 mags seem to be the cheapest possible buy and from all the information I have seen, are not that great.  Also, why are the prices so different?  I can understand why preban magazines would carry a heavy price tag but, why for a brand new 8 round 1911 magazine of good quality do you have to spend $20-30+ ? Sorry if this has been asked already but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I'm confused.

You can buy brand new Chip McCormick 8-round 1911 mags for about $12 each, and they work great.  Even Wilson Combat mags are only $22 or so, and they're the top-of-the-line.  USGI 1911 mags are all 7-rounders and can be had for $8 each.

GI mags were designed when the only round being fed was ball ammo.  Modern 1911 magazines are designed for optimal feeding of hollowpoint ammunition.  Quality 1911 magazines are comparable or cheaper in price to most factory magazines for other guns.  Price out the factory mags for some European pistols like the HKs or SIGs, you find that 1911 mags are quite affordable.

Yeah, I was looking at 47D's which seem to go for about $25, anywhere that has them less always sells out right away.  I just found it strange that USGI magazines can sometimes be had as low as $15, sometimes even less on the equipment exchange, and they are the best magazines. And these are preban that have not been made for 10 years.  I agree though, compared to mags for other pistols 1911 mags are pretty cheap sometimes.  Thanks for the info.
