| DPMS AP4 on the way.....first AR....most comments about Wolf ammo are negative...what about the polymer coated as opposed to the laquer coating....just as bad??.....thanks... |
A year or two ago there were a lot of negative comments about Wolf. Today, with the price of ammo what it is, there are almost none. Go figure. I've shot a few thousand of both the lacquered and poly and found no difference in functionality of my weapon. I actually took a torch to the old lacquered case and could not "melt" the lacquer off (heat until almost red then wipe with white cloth = nothing). It is good, comparatively inexpensive ammo that is slightly underpowered as compared to other ammo and delivers 3 to 4 MOA. The steel used is very soft (about the same hardness as brass). |
I would limit myself to a couple of boxes for test purposes at first. Some rifles are kind of ammo sensitive and have trouble with the lower power of the Wolf. This mostly happens in match type barrels, but better safe than sorry. |
Wolf is great practice ammo. Ignore all the crap you read about it. Go for the 62 grain bullet. IMHO, its more accurate and consistent than the 55 grain. Both about the same price.. Problem is, almost everyone is backordered. I have 2000 round on BO at sportsmansguide.com... they say they're shipping on 5/28. |
very true |
| I bought 100 rounds of the new poly Wolf a while back ago out of desperation. It ran fine in my AR mutt, and the accuracy was ok....ish. As others have said its good practice/plinking ammo, but not much else. I plan on taking a carbine course over the summer, and since that will require a lot of ammo I plan to buy a case of the stuff for that purpose. |
| let me start by saying i am not bashing wolf, i have shot thousands of rounds of it and will shoot thousands more. However, it does on an occasion get stuck in your chamber (3x out of around 15k rounds) not very often but it does happen last lot # i had a problem with was lot-p321-06 this last one was a royal bitch to get out as the extractor stripped the rim off the case so it was time to beat on it w/a rod. My $.02 hope this helps. |

I've never had any issues with Wolf ammo, even the old stuff in any of my ARs. Seem to me, based on what I've read here, it is mostly folks with none chrome lined barrels and chambers who have had issues. I want turn down wolf ammo, but I mainly shoot all brass cased ammo now days. But, with prices going up, I may have to look into wolf once again. TG |

I shoot pretty much only wolf these days. What I have seen over the years is it "ok". What I have found out is the Mil classic has a thiner coat of polymer than say the black box. For whatever reason this shit seems not to get stuck and runs much cleaner. Normally I would look at a case just ejected and see crude all over it even after 200 rds. Basically letting the chamber getting gunked up from the slower expansion from the steel. But the Mil classic doesn't seem to do that. Nor does it have the laquar coat on the bullet either. Apparently those are on just the AK rds. Just my thoughts. Wold |

I used Wolf long ago with the laquer coating. My Eagle Arms manufactured SS bull barrel rifle didn't like it. Tight breach. Rounds wouldn't even seat. Brass ammo would "form" to the breach. Steel... well, steel didn't. In my Armalite M4C, it should be OK with Wolf... I'll buy some and check. It's all about being tight. :-) Hardwarz |
