Hey guys i just got my AR (m4 style) together and went out to shoot it. first round was right on the money.......but the bolt didnt cycle. had to manually pull the charging handle to cycle a round. Tried again and the rounds are accurate, but it wont cycle. had to keep manually cycling rounds until about 6 rounds in, the bolt wouldnt come back. i yanked and yanked and yanked  but i couldnt get it back. finally set it up and did the ole butt stock slam and finally got it back. after that i packed it up and shot something else.

the only thing i can think of is that there is something wrong with the gas system, which i am not particulary familiar with or how to fix it. however, i was using Wolf ammo...but is that enough to mess it up that bad?

Btw, the setup is a Colt 14.5" upper (pinned, legal), S&W M&P lower, DPMS stock/buffer/spring, M16 Full Auto BCG.

I would first check the gas key to make sure you have it tightened to specs, but I don't suspect this is your problem.  Next, I would pull off the front sight or gas block and make sure to take special care to align it over the gas port in your barrel.

Used gun?

First thing to do would be to see if your getting ant gas down the tube. Take a 6 in piece of rubber tubing that fits snug over the gas tube (like used in fishing tackle) and blow, you should be able to blow through it if not then someone used something to "clean" the gas tube and you have an obstruction. Gas tubes never need cleaning.

the gas key is good to go, that's the first thing i checked. im thinking that there may be an obstruction in the gas tube, but dont know how to check that....

there is a pin missing directly below the front sight. is there something supposed to be there? i had assumed it was for a sling...

the gun is mostly new. i got the upper slightly used in a trade. it was so 'new' that there wasnt any scratches or BCG wear. everything thing else is new

First I'd clean the chamber really well.
Then I'd try a differant brassed case ammo first to make sure it wasnt the ammo.
Wolf is notorious for being underpowered.

Do you mean that there is a pin missing below the actual sight, but above the barrel.  If so, you have found your problem.  It is the roll pin that holds the gas rod to the front sight mount.  Gas would be escaping there.

If it is below the barrel it could be your problem as well if it is a missing taper pin that holds the front sight in place on the barrel.  If it is missing, your front sight may have rotated around the barrel just slightly to the point where it is not lined up with the gas port in the barrel.

ok guys, think i found the problem.

the pin that i saw was missing is just for the sling. However, there was another pin missing; the pin that holds the gas tube within the front sights. took it to a buddy of mine (armorer) and he found it right away. i havent shot it yet, but we can all assume there will be a different outcome. if it's not that pin, then im at a loss as to what it is. i have other ammo, i just didnt have it out there when i was shooting. the chamber is squeeky clean too.

i'll update after i've shot it again.....if the damn thing doesnt blow up on me
