Here's my XM4 7.62x39 build, just like they never made em' in 1980.
Colt 7.62 M4 marked grey upper and Colt 1/12 heavy bbl.  I cut the bbl down to 14.7 just in front of the markings and pinned and welded an A2 type flash hider and peel washer for 16.1".  80,% lower, laser engraved with what I think it might have looked like. Early shiney A2 grip.  Uni-mag, multi caliber magazine, I like it because it looks normal and holds 28 rounds, and works well. Buttstock is the early coated metal type.
 It doesn't have a bayonet lug, but since Colt was experimenting with stuff at the time, I figure it could be legit.  In the future, I'll probably turn down thr barrel for the grenade launcher recess, and swap out the FSB.

I really like it!

One observation: Regarding the time frame of a XM4 wouldn't  "COLT's MFG. CO. INC" be more correct?

EDIT: I am wrong. Most likely it was "Colt's Firearms Division" back then.

I don't know what year they started making it, but in early 90's they made one of the neutered MT models in 7.62x39. No flash hider and pinched receiver. But it was very nice and completely reliable even with steel-case ammo.

You're right, it probably wasn't Defense.  I'll have to make another!  Good catch!

A friend of mine with a laser engraver.  I don't think you can send them off anywhere to get Colt stuff done.

From what I can tell by the pictures, the style and fonts are quite good the engraving is top-notch. Congrats on a job well done!

@Kane419

That's a Ross and Zheng mag, they were made with a special follower and were supposed to handle any caliber, 5.56, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, .300blk, .450 Bushmaster, 6.8SPC, and several others.  I know mine was flawless with 5.56, 5.45, .300, and 7.62x39.

I don't think they ever went into production though.

They did go into production - but they moved slowly at the original (I think) $40 price point. A couple of years back the retailer blew them out at $10 a mag (picked up a dozen) and closed up shop.

Zheng was a member here.

They did go into production, and the Gen 1 was too wide/long for magwells.  Gen 2 fixed that and is a fine mag.

Damn shame they stopped production, hope they sell the patent.

Wow, I don't know how I missed that, I would have easily bought a dozen too.  Busy with life at the time, I guess.

Yeah, for every 1 time I get in on a deal I miss 10, easily.

I use my Unimags in a mashup XM177 in 7.62x39...
