Am I correct in saying the general consensus is the XM855PD ammo is not a burn to buy? I've been reading the threads, and that is my understanding. What do the Moderators think? Also, does any one know where to get some boxed IMI M855? I need to get some for my SHTF stash. |

A few threads down www.banedsr.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=219261 |
+1 it really isnt that much cheaper to justify buying it... Even when XM193 comes up it is around the same price. Actually the M855PD is more expensive. |
My gut thought was that PD ammo sucked, but I'm still somewaht of a newb, so I had to ask. I need to find some IMI M855 or L.C. that passed. Any ammo leads on these? |
|
Sellier&Bellot ZV SS 109 is some good ammo you might check out also? Chuck Santose Tested some out fo me . Its hotter than M855!! 3184FPS killer SD14! Thats good for military stuff! But I do have a stash of IMI M855 and some 99 L.C.M855 if you are going to just shoot it at the range then get the PD |
| I bought a couple cases, and there was only badly dented round that I hesitated to shoot. There were a couple dozen others that were loaded a bit short and some others that could not be reloaded due to damage to the case, but all of that shot fine. There were usually 20-30 extra rounds in each case. |
|
I didn't find any tracers in the last case I bought, but there were a few with M193 bullets that had green painted tips. The profile of the bullets ( M193 ) was different from the others, so I pulled a couple, and they weighed 55 gr. There were a few with split necks, and dented cases also. I wouldn't stock up on XM855PD for SHTF purposes, but for general range use, they are fine. I have had no squibs, misfires, or any other nasties with this stuff. I also did not observe pretzels, Twinkies, Cheetos, or other snack foods present in my ammo. |
|
I BELIEVE THAT MANY HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE PD SOLD BY SPORTSMANS GUIDE. I HAD TO COUNT MINE OUT LAST NIGHT TO SPLIT IT WITH A BUDDY AND BESIDES THERE BEING 8 EXTRA ROUNDS ALL LOOK GOOD (THEY PROBABLY JUST WEIGHT THEM SO THE COUNT CAN VARY) MINE CAME IN THE 1000 ROUND "FOR TRAINING USE" BOX WITH NO SNACKFOOD REMNANTS PRESENT. EVERYONE BE SERIOUS THAT SHTF IS UNLIKELY AND IF IT DOES HAPPEN YOU WILL PROBABLY SQUEEZE ANYTHING YOU CAN INTO A MAG REGARDLESS OF WHERE IT CAME FROM. |
did you pay 8 bucks for it? |

I stockpile XM193, in cartons. I bought some of the XM855PD when it first came out. I haven't shot much of it. I got it before the complaints started coming in. IIRC most of the problems are related to the XM193PD. I prefer XM193 to XM855 for SHTF ammo. It's cheaper, and performs better. Neither the XM193PD or XM855PD are really worth the expense, and trouble, especially with questions to the reliability of either. I used to use XM193 exclusivly. I've started shooting Wolf in my plinkers, my remaining XM855PD in my SD carbine (as practice ammo) and BH Blue Box in my Recce. I use BH Red Box 75gr Heavy Match as my SD ammo. |
Yes. The owner was out sick today and had a temporary guy working for him. When the owner gets back, he will give me a deal on it, the temp guy said he didn't have the authority.

It's good ammo, just seems a bit pricey. Of coures, Ammoman is now selling cases of XM193 in the cartons for $229. Things are tough all over. |
|
Yes, I will buy more also. 1,000 rds through 20" bushmaster. They were a little dirty but they are hot heavy.gif |
I think I'd rather spend the $5.62 you saved by buying bulk ammo on XM193 in cartons.
|
| I got my 1000 rounds of M855PD from ammoman last week all dated 03 and 04 no tracers or snacks, found 8 rounds out of the lot I would not shoot. Actually 2 were bad, 1 was really bad with a split neck and 5 I chose not to shoot because I am overly cautious. Shot 90 rnds last night with no problems, I would buy more. |
|
I have several thousand of the XM855PD and they look a little dirty, but so far, they all shoot just fine. As far as using it for SHTF ammo....no, I don't think so. The Aussie 308 in the FAL and the M-1A's would be my first choice for that duty for me and my son. The 5.56 in the shorties would be for the wife and daughters to use. |
![]() Wait. Let me say that again. ![]() There's no reason to buy ammo for $400/1000. There IS still good M193 out there if you haven't stockpiled some already for about HALF that price. |
I do. I bought this when NOBODY had XM193 in cartons...just the 193 PD. Those rounds I will stay away from. |
+1 I have not found a single round in the current box of XM855PD that I got from Ammoman that I wouldn't shoot. But like Chewy said, I can accept a small percentage of loss. And in the extremely unlikely event of a SHTF sittuation I wouldn't hesitate to use this ammo, remeber it's the same stuff the Military uses. There is most deffinetly better ammo out there but far worse as well. A good choice for affordable ammo. James |

SS109 or the XM855PD or what ever you want to call it. I do not like the green tips for one reason. I don’t like the green paint flaking off and getting into the action and all over the rifle. I found flakes in the chamber and in my trigger group. This concerned me, I feel it can get forced into the gas tube maybe causing a future problem, because I don’t clean the GT and can’t look inside it, so no more Green tipped ammo for me. This may be paranoid reasoning but hey the XM193 is just a bit more money and I don’t have to worry. I bought one 1000 round case at a show and all of it was good stuff. No FTF or FTE. |
| A lot of us are not buying the XM855PD just because its cheap. I buy it because its more accurate than XM193 when shot from my 20" 1/7 twist Colt. I use XM193 in my 14 1/2" and 16" 1/9 twist BMs. I would be interested in finding out if the green paint has any effect on the gas tube etc. |

I bougth 2k IIRC. I had one round that looked dangerously dented. I had about 20 rounds out of each thousand that had some problems. Some had slightly ripped necks or little dings in them. They shot OK, but you could not reload them. Some were loaded a little on the short side, but again shot OK. One had the steel penetrator off center, with the result that the bullet looked like a limp dick. That was pretty comical, but it shot fine. There were usually 20 or so extra rounds in each box. It is decent range ammo IMHO. I still pine for IMI M193.
