I shot some of the American Eagle .223cal. tracer XM856 today. Out of a box of 20 only two lit up, a few had at a "smoke" trail and the rest were nothing. I was firing out to 1,000 yards.

I fired it out of a 20inch 1x9 twist Bushmaster barrel. I have fired other tracers before with 100% lite. I they were USGI 55 grain as I remember. The American Eagles are 64grain.

Is it the 1x9 barrel twist???

I don't think the 1/9 twist will stabilize the 64gr tracer round. I believe the bullet is too long. I don't know if that would have anything to do with whether they lit or not.

I've just received 500rds of this same tracer ammo.  My m4gerys are 1/7 so I could give it a test (unsure when I'll have time tho! )

I would think the 1x7 vs. 1x9 twist would have nothing to do with if they lit or not, but I can't think of any other reason.

The few that did lit went right on target.

Maybe this ammo failed government acceptance for too many "blinds" (tracer not lighting properly) which would account for it being sold to the civilian market.

D.D.

1x9 should work just fine. Sounds link you go some bunk rounds. I had  some Radway greens that  did not lite either.

What was the temperature and how many yards did the projectile go while you could observe that it would flying straight?

Temperature was around 55 degrees. Out of 40 rounds fired about five lit up. A few smoked at bit and the rest were blind tracers. I was a bright day, but with other tracers I've had it made no difference bright or dark.

One lit up and went on target at 400 yards. Another lit and went on target at 800 yards The others were on target at around 1,000 yards. I was shooting across a deep canyon. I thought I was shooting to close at first, so I went out to longer distances it made no difference.

I have shot 69grain Sierra MatchKings in the 1x9 barrel and they shoot very well.

The other USGI tracers I had before came off of links and were LC NATO dated 1986. 100% trace bright days or dark.

I don't see why this stuff won't lite. Headstamp is LC NATO 2005.

I have hand loaded tracers from the VietNam era and have had no trouble with those either bright days or dark.

I was on another ammo thread. It appears I'm not the only one having issues with these tracers. They were also having most rounds as blind tracers.

I bought it online at Ammunitiontogo.com. It was $9.95 a box. I could have got it cheaper from another dealer but I didn't really look around for it. PLus I only bought 80 rounds cause' I don't plan on shooting it any time soon.

I don't think that's the same stuff. But $1.35/rnd for 19 year old ammo Is that the high tech "English" ammo that curves around barriers?

Always the sarcastic idiots on arfcom. I'm just helping a buddy sell off some surplus and you are correct. It's not new stuff, and YES IT LIGHTS UP. And no sorry he doesn't have any curving ammo, but we may be listing some .308 SLAP rounds if that interests you...

The steel containing jacketed AK47 ammo I had (just WOLF military classic) penetrated less steel at 25 yards than M855 did at 150 yards.

I wish I would have read this thread first.  I just bought 100 rounds from Natchez.  Oh well, I'm not planning on shooting them anytime soon.
