alright, i'm looking at getting a yhm "lightweight four rail forearm system" however, i have read that taking the front sight off is a bitch, and i've looked it over on my rra 16" and am questioning my ability to do it without fucking it up. would i just be better off to go with the two piece? i hear they are solid, i just wonder what you lose by going with them. input on this would be greatly appreciated. if anyone that has pics of them please show and tell-i would like to see what they look like on a rifle. thanks. jake

As long as you don't have a post ban (permanently attached) muzzle brake, it's not that hard. Look at the pins holding the front sight on...if they stick out on either side, they'll be tougher than the ones that are flush (don't stick out). Either way, squirt some Kroil or Liquid Wrench on them, and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. If you have the kind that stick out, like my 2 Olympic Match Barrels had, then you need a concave punch so you don't peen the end. A #4 nail punch will work, iirc. Anyway, you want to drive the pin out from the left side of the gun to the right side, as the pins are tapered. Once you've given the Kroil or LW time to work, put the barrel on something to support it really well, and give the punch a REAL good 1st whack...you want to try and break it loose with the fewest number of strikes (to avoid peening it with repeated hits). You might even want to use a 2lb hammer. Once you get 'em started, you can finish with a regular punch, although once the go past a certain point, they'll just drop out. If you have the ones that are flush, you still have to give em a good whack, but they should come out easier. Model 1 uses straight pins that are flush...they're a breeze to get out. Olypic uses taper pins that stick out, those are the kind that you can screw up with the wrong kind of punch. An extra set of hand to hold the barrel straight while you get it lined up will help, but I hava bench block, and the barrel is very well supported, so I didn't need 'em. If you get the YHM, consider getting their wrench...it makes tightening the jam nut really easy. |
