Will any spanner wrench work on the blocking ring? I have an Armor's Spanner wrench, but wasnt sure if YHM required a super secret spanner wrench?
Also does anyone have any tricks to keep the hand guard in line with the upper or tricks on tightening the ring without scratching it? Thanks |

Thanks I think you're talking about a YHM free float handguard and the jam nut used to lock the handguard top in place once it's indexed to the upper. If that's the case then my procedure is to position the jam nut on the barrel nut so that it's not all the way back on the barrel nut, but also not allowing a few threads to show. I then thread the handguard on until it touches the jam nut. Next I check how well the handguard is indexed. I'll adjust the jam nut forward or back until the handguard is indexed properly. My goal is to have the handguard index tightly against the jam nut before ever tightening the jam nut. Once the handguard is where I want it I'll use a strap wrench to hold it in position while I tighten the jam nut into the handguard. Some YHM handguards will also use a set screw on the bottom on the handguard to make tightening the jam nut easier. IIRC the diamond series has a set screw but the customizable tube does not. The jam nut can be tightened with the spanner wrench on an armorer's tool. You can put a piece of electrical tape on the hook of the spanner wrench to keep from marking up the jam nut. |
