I have a Bushmaster A3 Carbine. It was a post ban rifle and came with a muzzle brake that is similar to a Y-Comp. It may be a Y-Comp but the pictures of the Y-Comps that I have seen, none of the Y-Comps have 3 large ports on the top of the muzzle brake like mine does. It has 3 large ports down the left and right side. It has two rows of two ports on top that are off set left and right. In the center on top and set back behind the two sets of smaller ports is a row of three larger ports. whew!!! I have not fired this rifle yet. Are these muzzle brakes better to use than say a GI A2 flash suppressor? I am open to recommendations of flash suppressors. I prefer something that doesn't have much of a down blast. Thanks! |

What your fellow board members are trying to say here is.... The Y-Comp is crap. LOL! The reason the Y-comp is thought of as evil (which it is) is because of the muzzle blast it directs straight back at the shooter when fired. You will be hard pressed to find a louder, more uncomfortable brake to shoot with. It is NO comparison to the birdcage which is a 100 times better. If you got a M4 with a 14.5" barrel, make sure to get a brake that is at least 1.5" long. The birdcage is not. |

Good Advice Noob! I have Phantoms on both my AR's now, and have no complaints. As far as recoil goes, I really didn't notice the Y-comp being any better than the Phantoms. The AR15 is a smooth gun as is, with very little felt recoil. (IMHO) The phantom is smoother, and way quieter than ANY compensator, especially the Y-comps. |
+1 It depends on what you want the rifle for. I have a Y comp on my three gun rifle and it's great. If you're shooting as fast a possible while still hitting you targts, it helps. If you're just plinking or shooting groups, it doesn't matter. As for the blast and loudness, you're wearing hearing protection anyway, so what does it matter?? Although I would never want to touch off a round with the Y comp with no hearing protection!!! Deafening for sure. |
DITTO! WE ALL HAVE TO WEAR EAR PROTECTION ANYWAYS....... |
| I had a Y-comp at one time. I think it does exactly what it was designed to do and it does it very well. It does an excelent job at keeping the muzzle rize to just a tiny bump and it reduces the percieved recoil to almost non existant. Unfortunately, it does this by shooting flaming death back and too the sides. Much to the discomfort of anyone around me. |

Every time this topic comes up, I remember somebody once commenting that it functioned as a combination muzzlebrake and flashbang grenade. I thought that was a fair description. P.S. I also got rid of my Mini-Y ASAP. [cough]www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/page/page/29585.htm[/cough] |
![]() One could just as easily point out the silliness of "riflemen" who only consider the merits of shooting on a range or in a match. I am not interested in a rifle that only performs well in places and times when I can don my hearing protection. If (god forbid) I must use my carbine in a home defense scenario, I doubt I will have time to put on my Peltors. Therefore, I am not interested in a device that only has advantages in a three-gun match and can actually cause hearing damage if used in any other situation. I have already damaged my hearing enough while in the Army, thank you. At least, that is what I'd say if I wasn't interested in maintaining harmony here.
