Over the past several days of trying to zero my Bushmaster 20" A2 I have run into some problems. On the first day, this past Wednesday, I tried to zero, I was using "Remington EXPRESS® CORE-LOKT® SOFT POINT BULLETS." These shot very nicely putting shots into tight patterns at 25 yards. After running out of Remington I loaded "Federal XM193" into the gun. These shot nicely too but were a bit more spread out than the Remington. On Wednesday I was shooting from having the gun supported against wood pallets at my grandfathers saw mill. On Saturday we were headed to my grandfathers hunting land for a picnic. I took my gun to a field and was going to put a final zero at 35 yards. I brought along a bipod for more steady shooting. The ammo I brought was "Federal XM193" and "Winchester Q3131". The XM193 was shooting nicely and we were just a few clicks to the left and perfect on elevation when I ran out of ammo. Then I switched to the Q3131. The shots from it were all over the target. I would go from being 3 inches high to being 3 inches low from only one turn of the front sight. I think I shot 40 rounds of Q3131 trying to get it on target and am still getting nowhere close. Now I am just going to try to start from nothing again but this time try only Remington ammo since it seemed to have the best results. My question is, on the "Ammunition review and reference " thread, the Remington UMC is the only Remington brand of ammo listed. Is it the best kind of Remington? Why isn't any other Remington brand on there? I'm sure it would be better than something like Wolf. My other question is about the Winchester Q3131. I heard good things about this ammo. The thing is, I have heard about both Q3131 and Q3131A. Is the brand with the A different from the brand without the A at the end? |
What about Q3131? |

Q3131 (discontinued in 2000, due to Winchester/Olin losing the contract to operate Lake City to Federal/ATK) was good, M193-class ammo manufactured at Lake City, with one exception: Many lots of Q3131 manufactured in 1999 (the last year it was made) have significant over-pressure problems, and are known to have poor accuracy for this reason. I suspect bad powder, but nothing has been conclusively proven. Winchester doesn't want to talk about it. -Troy |
