I'd buy a pre-ban M4 just the standard stuff.  no extra goodies.  ;P

If I had to have the rifle completed I would get a RRA M4 flat top from the EE.  ARMS 40, ARMS 22M68, Aimpoint ML2.

When I started I bough a NIB preban Bushmaster carbine lower for $1200 and started from there.

If you buy a preban gun for $1200 you wont have money for anything else. You will need lots of goodies to get started so take that into account. Gun case, ammo, mags, cleaning supplies, eye protection, ear protection, targets and more ammo. Thats just to start. It doesn't even take into account accurizing the gun or putting money into other extras like, 2 stage trigger, scope, bipod, free floating the barrel, vertical grip, light, laser and improved pistol grip. There are many options for setting up the rifle. You will spend all of the $1200 and then some to get a preban rifle. Thats ok as long as you want to customize your rifle over time but if you want more goodies to start with or be able to afford some of the must have's you might want to go with a post ban. Sincerly, someone whe just spent $880 on a new postban rifle and $635 on must have stuff.

I have a 20" Bushmaster A2 and just got a 16" A3 shorty a few weeks ago. I put a Holosight and Bushmaster flip up rear sight on it.
I still like the 20" but The 16" is by far my favorite rifle now.

LukeG-  Excellent choice, you won't be sorry.  I forget though, is it light or dark beer with the 16" bbl?  I would suggest a good red dot scope next.  Possibly the Aimpoint Comp ML2.  Enjoy your new rifle and be SAFE!

Start with a nice pre ban colt lower with raised mag well and small pins. Shop for a nice all Colt M4 upper. I know it will take more than what you have but its like building a house, if the foundation is shaky the whole house will eventually crumble. build a nice rifle and dont try to cut corners. You will be happy in the long run.

DevL, are you a Marine?

LMAO

I was going to say something about liberty in third world countries...

As for what I'd do with $1200, I second DevL's suggestions TO THE LETTER.  Hell, it's what I did (but I also added M33 handguards).
