Building an upper to add to the collection of .223 bolt based calibers. Anyone have any experience or recommendations on gas length and buffer weight?

BHW offers a light contour 18" for less money. My question was gas length (I can order car or mid) and buffer weight.

Back when I was building 17 Remingtons in 2002 or so, I was using a .089" gas port on 20" barrels with rifle gas systems.
Considering an 18" barrel, I would go with a mid-length.

We were using standard A2 rifle buffers and springs.  Around 5oz I believe.

I'm shooting a 24" rifle gas in 17 and 17-223.  Standard buffer with adjustable gas blocks. Both are BHW barrels and do well on PD's. Mine perfer the Hornady HP's and dislike the tipped VMAX. Not unusual in 17's but it was educational for me on my first tube.

I love my 17 Rem but if I was doing it again I'd go 17-204 or 17/223 for brass availability
