Ok guys, I dont know much about the .17 round or the guns that shoot them but today at the store I saw a Savage rifle in .17 bolt action, with stainless bull barrel (floating) on a laminated wood thumb through stock with scope rings already on it for a little less than $350!  My father gave me a $500 gift card to this place and I got really atracted to it.  Can anyone fill me in on how good these guns are?

I do alot of varmit hunting and plinking at my ranch/farm.  What would be some killing ranges with the gun on say a coyote, 200yds? 100yds?

.17HMR? If so that rifle is a tack driving varmint killer. You'll love it.

BTW I wouldn't call it a "sniper" unless you are a glutton for punishment...

With the right ammo they will easily shoot less than an inch at 100yds.

Recoil is a killer

It's like a more accurate .22 mag. Don't do anything you wouldn't with a .22 mag.

Hey, don't let anyone give you flak about calling it a sniper rifle.  All you have to do is shoot some prairie dogs, record it all with a high-speed camera, publish a grainy slow-motion version of the video on youtube, and voila!  Instant USMC sniper footage straight from Afghanistan!

Yea, I have seen that video floating around on the net. It's titled as killing doon coons but it's just prarie dogs

I may pick this gun up to add to my collection. I was glad to see that it shoots .6 inch groups at 100yds and travels at over 4,000 fps!  That leaves me with $150-200 for a scope

I may be going sometime soon to maybe pick up a savage .17HMR. I am thinking a Nikon 3-9-40 prostaff should work fine on it.  They have it on sale for $346 (stainless with thumbhole laminated wood stock.

17HMR shoots at 2550fps not 4,000fps. You are thinking of a different 17 round.

Well after alot of thinking, I am not going to be buying the gun as in I already have 2 rifles, a pistol, shotgun, and 2 muzzle loaders...

I may put money into my AR or save up for a .50BMG

I have a Savage 93 BoltAction .17HMR with the hardwood stock and Bull barrel.

That is a helluva flat shooting round.

I love it.  But, it is not cheap to shoot....
