| Friend of mine looking for a general purpose 308 AR. Wants a shorter barrel probably 16". Will be used as range toy and maybe some hog hunting. I am much more familiar with AR15s. I was thinking Armalite but definitely open to suggestions. $2000 is the absolute top end of his budget however that is not including optics. |

Armalite is definitely good to go. I would suggest one of their "tactical" or more basic rifles with the CMV chrome lined barrels. These are really fantastic barrels.
This leaves room for extras like stocks or handguards, optics obviously, extra mags and stacking ammo. Armalite is going to be one of the best factory rifles you can start with. |

Sig716 My neighbor has one. He has decided to sell his and buy something else. He can not change the barrel. There are some other parts he wants to change as well but is unable to. Sorry I do not recall what these other parts are. He asked me what 308 rifle he should get. I told him Armalite (I don't own one), DPMS (own a couple), or a few others but he needed to define what he wanted first before I could really point him in a direction. |

Are all of the Armalite guns of equal quality as far as mechanics or should he avoid certain models? Avoid "Eagle" branded stuff. They just recently started putting these out and are of similar quality to PTAC gear. They'll work, but will most likely need help getting there. The cheapest ones to look at are the Defender models. These have the same warranty and what not as the rest, but skip on the nice trigger and use cheap regular furniture. The Eagle stuff is cheaper, but only 100$ at most, but are blemished parts, and don't go through the same QC checks. Only 1 year warranty on those i believe. ETA: Years ago they offered Eagle Arms stuff, or were Eagle arms, something like that. That stuff was decent quality. But unlikely to find those very often. |

I would look at Armalite's DEF-10 and consider massaging it to what I wanted. They're $1049 on Armalite's website and take the DPMS/KAC/Larue/Magpul 308 mags. I recently built off an Aero upper/lower combo and I'm happy with it. If you want a nice trigger in it, put an MBT on order from Larue while they're on sale for $99. Excellent general purpose/spr trigger. Very crisp second stage. Full power hammer springs, unlike some of the other aftermarket triggers. The Geissele B-G2S-E is another decent option, about the same pull weight but uses a heavier first stage and lighter second stage. If you want to go all out, the Geissele High Speed Match triggers are great but very spendy - If you want a 2lb overall pull - this is the route to go. |

There's a real nice Seekins SP10 in the EE right now that's right there at the top of his budget.

| I would go with the Armalite DEF10. I wasn't impressed with the Bushmaster ORC .308 I purchased and ending up swapping everything out but the receivers. I think the Armalite offers a better quality and value than a factory Bushmaster or DPMS, and comes in cheap enough your friend can still buy an optic and ammo. |
| Armalite is a decent choice but only if it uses SR25 style mags, their one drawback is the weak Lothar Walther barrels. (Unless SAC has addressed these issues since acquisition). I would only consider guns that use the SR25 based mags. My dark horse would be the DPMS GII, a buddy has one built for pigs and its damn nice. I have owned DPMS LR, Eagle and Armalite (M14 mag) guns which I no longer have. The only modern AR10 I have currently is PSA, I built it for right around a grand. Building will get you to the desired configuration more directly and for less w/o having to change stuff out and try to sell take offs. |
| I'm pretty sure the flames will flow, but have him look at Rock River LAR-8's...barrels are cryo'd from the factory, 2stage match trigger, and use FN/FAL mags...I've had the A-3 for years...its as accurate as any bolt gun that I have...I'm not a "tacti-cool" kind of guy...I shoot competively...I like the A-2 stock and the 20" barrel...I shoot it with both optics and National Match irons...Shrps74 |

I gotta say.. prebuilt AR10s are a ripoff.. If he can build it himself (or pay you to do it) then I would suggest that. I'm about to assemble my Aero Precision match .308 AR10 for less than $1400 without glass
That being said I do understand the appeal of just buying an AR10 that is done and ready to go. Don't have to deal with assembly etc.. |
