Sorry for another newbie question.... If I have my rife zeroed at a certain distance with 5.56 ammo (say 55 grain) and I switch to .223, should I expect my bullet to hit low with the .223 vs 5.56 due to the different charge?

What's the weight of the 223? And how do you know if the charge is different?

You have to test it.

Assuming youre going from 55gr 556 to 55gr 223, then theoretically you should have a slightly lower muzzle velocity and ultimately have a lower POI.  With that said, I highly doubt you would see a noticeable difference at anything less than 150m.  I usually practice for competitions (targets under 100m) with 55gr 223 and 556 interchangeably and I've never had an issue.  If you're trying to hit a golf ball at 400m, you might want to redo your ballistics chart for the ammo change.

You could have a point of impact change between any two given loads for any number of reasons.  It'll likely be minimal if all you're doing is going from a 55gr 5.56 load to a 55gr .223 load, but the only way to know what the shift is and how big is to try it out.

Different rounds of the same weight will have different poi.  Hell, even different lots of the same ammo can hit to a different poi
