The .22LR conversion kit for the AR.  Is it worth it or am I better off just buying a Ruger 10/22 for the same purpose?

You'll never get the accuracy out of the .22 conversion kit that you will out of a ruger (nor the reliablity).

The .22 conversion kit is great to practice with on indoor ranges that don't allow .223, or for introducing new shooters to the AR.

I've had one for a number of years now, and I've found it shoots roughly 1" groups at 25 yards from a 1:9 twist barrel.  At 50 yards the group is closer to 4" and has dropped from point of aim.  Foreget 100y (Last time I tried it the group was more like a pattern...).

I like my .22 conversion kit for what it is, but I still have a .22 rifle (or two).

There are .22 conversions and there are dedicated uppers in .22LR.  Remember that the rifling twist for the .22 is 1:16 and a dedicated upper will have that with a .222 bore instead of .224.  Conversions are great just for a subcal training device but if you plan on hunting with the .22 than a 10/22 would be prefered.

By the way I have both a M261 conversion for training and a 10/22 for hunting.

I started my son out with the M261 .22 conversion in his AR. It was fun, cheap training, and accuracy was really pretty impressive. At 25m groups were as stated above, about .75-1.0" and I could easily hit soda cans at 50-75m.

I take a 10/22 to the range and shoot spinning targets with a rapid fire style in between the "serious" group shooting I do with my AR.

My 10/22 is set up with a bull barrel from Green Mountain which I really enjoy because it has Williams (iron style) Fire Sights. I also have a simple Houge overmolded stock and a very light trigger job. The gun has a nice weight to it and shooting the spinners with iron sights as quickly as possible is a great diversion and skill builder.
