I could have sworn there was an ammo FAQ for this but i'm not finding it. Nevertheless. I've ordered a CMMG .22LR conversion kit and expect it in a week or so. also ordered a few extra BDM Mags. I'm running an MP15 with a standard 16in 1/9 twist barrel. I've read that these .22 kits require high velocity ammo. heres the question. How do i know non HV ammo from HV? is it marked on the packages as HV, or do i need to look for an FPS rating or something?
walmart and dicks are closest ammo suppliers. what are the typical brands/loads etc i can find at walmart that are HV? I know i'll need to experiment with what ammo will run the best in the converted gun, but i'd like to get an idea of where to start. thanks |

Pretty much all rimfire ammo is labeled "high velocity" or "standard velocity" ,most anything labeled "target" would be assumed to be standard velocity.
Some of the semi-autos and AR rimfire conversion or dedicated uppers will be fussy about ammo, extra so when new and "stiff" Generally the best advise is to use a 40 gr full power plated round to start with to wear in your particular gun. The one ammo that is the gold standard for function and reliability is 40 gr round nose CCI Mini Mags.Of course they cost more than the bulk stuff. The Mini Mags are available at the Wall -marts in my area. Some of the bulk packed Federal (both blue box and auto match) have worked decent for me , my results with the rem golden bulk has been poor in semi autos but some seem to like it. I assume some lots are better than others. Accuracy and reliability will vary from gun to gun with different ammo, you really need to try a bunch of different ammo to see with your own gun, |

CCI Mini-Mags, WW PowerPoint, WW HV HP in the 333 pack. I tried thw Wal-Mart Fed 525 bulk pak... works ok, but not 100% like the first 3. Remington Golden bulk pak... not so good. I had lots of jams with that. Spikes dedicated 22 upper on a Tactical Innovations lower and a S&W MP15T lower. YMMV |
| thanks for the replies. should i get plated or non? copper or lead? i also seem to recall reading that i need to use a round nose bullet vs HP or flat point any truth to this? I assume a round nose would feed better, and a copper or plated bullet would leave less fouling than lead. am i correct? |
