when using a .22 conversion with a 5.56 AR pistol, does it utilize the gas tube or does it work off of blowback ?

Basically, if you have an unported short barrel, will it still work ?

I am sure it is a silly question..but I appreciate everyones help

It does NOT work off of the gas-system––- it is blow-back.

so you don't need a gas-ported barrel =)

i assume the differernt .22 conversions don't utilize the buffer system on the pistol....

No, the buffer system is not needed for .22 LR. In fact, you can buy a "butt plug" from places like Spike's Tactical.

Is there any particular reason why you used a 9mm upper?

For 22lr I dont need a forward asist, or brass deflector but a 9mm gas deflector
keeps any blowback crap out of my face when using a can.
And I purchased 3 9mm upper rec for a very good price and needed to
put them to use.
