I'm in-between uppers. Ammo for the .22 is cheaper, but wouldn't the 5.45 be more suitable for defense? Assuming I can't afford/find 556, which of these uppers would be more suitable for plinking but home defense as well if I'm stuck with it for the time being?

Do they even make self defense rounds in .22?

If your worried about using the rifle for actual tactical/ home/self defense, go with the 5.45
If you want to shoot for cheap, go with the .22

This is a no brainer. Just get whatever AR you can afford and get a conversion kit drop in bolt. Then you could use the .22 for plinking/practice and change to the big boys in seconds. That's what I do

For one all-around upper, I would go with 5.45. I have a 5.56 and a .22lr. The 22 is for plinking/practice and the 5.56 never gets shot.  At least the 5.45 is cheap enough to shoot, and is actually a centerfire rifle round.
