I am interested in building my own .243WSSM conversion upper... or something similar. Where could I get a barrel and bolt for this type of build? Bolt more than barrel. Barrel shouldn't be that big of a deal. Bolt seems to be more difficult.

Olympic Arms is the only company that actually makes parts for the WSSM, and I don't believe they sell them to individuals.

What sort of upper were you wanting to build?   Barrel length?  Twist?

I wanted to try to build a 24" for coyote to be used also for target. Not sure as far as twist rate. Just think I could do a little better job and squeeze a little better accuracy out of it... with the aid of a good gunsmith.

They are GREAT for coyotes!  I don't like swinging a 24" barrel, and the expierementing that I have done showed that I didn't really loose any velocity with the bullets that I was shooting, so I went with a 22" barrel.  I am shooting bullets in the 85 grain area.  I shoot 85 grain Nosler partitions for deer and the 85 grain Sierra HPBT for varmint and predators.

Most of what I have used has been the 1:10 twist, but I have done a few in 1:8 and a couple in 1:12 as well.

Aside from an upper from Olympic Arms or Dedicated Technology I don't think you have to many options.

I have only built a few of the 6 WOA's but a couple of hundred of the .243 WSSM's.  Both are capable of very fine accuracy.

The 6 WOA I only build with Shilen select-match stainless barrels, but the WSSM I also build them with the Oly SUM barrel.  The SUM barrel normally shoots quite well, but with the Shilen barrel and the extra attention to detail on the chambering, fine accuracy is the norm.

The WOA and WSSM are really in a different "class".  I think if you chambered both of them in a bench-gun, the WOA would probably out-shoot the WSSM.  On the AR platform it's a little more difficult to assess the fine accuracy differences.

Last fall, I build a .243 WSSM for a guy that wanted it for high-power competition.  When he received it he took it to the range to break-in the barrel and get his scope mounted and sighted in.  He loaded up a bunch of ammo using some inexpensive, 95 grain Nosler ballistic tips.  He was shooting and cleaning as he adjusted his scope.  His first 5-shot group was .152" @ 100 yards!   He didn't have a huge amount of time for load development before the "F" class competition, but he ended up taking 4th in the state.  He was elated!

Most of my customers are purchasing the WSSM for hunting, not competition.  I don't get a huge amount of feed-back on accuracy on them.  I did a fair amount of load development with my personal .243 WSSM when I first built it.  I used a 22" fluted and compensated Oly SUM barrel.  With 87 grain Hornady HPBT bullets I got 5-shot groups into 1/2" @ 100 yards and single digit standard deviation.  Several other bullets gave me similar accuracy.  I shot the 87 grain Hornadys on long-range prairie dogs with great results.  When white tail season came along, I just substituted the 85 grain Nosler partition for the Hornady bullet.  The groups were in the .7" area with no other adjustment change in the load.  The good part was that the POI was so close that you could switch between the two loads and not have to adjust the scope.  I have taken many nice white tail with the WSSM and they have all been DRT.
