does anyone know of a good source of .308 AP (black tip) that aren't reloads/remanufacutured rounds? |
| There wont be a readily available source since AP ammo can only be made by people liscensed to do so and they are prohibited from sell that ammunition to you or they will have their liscense revoked. .308 AP ammo is AP pistol ammo. The only allowed AP ammo is 30.06 and 50 BMG ammo. All .308 AP ammo you might find will be made before the ban on AP ammo and held by a non FFL holder for private sale. |
| An individual can load and shoot, and sell, as much AP as he feels like it. FFL holders can only sell to other holders or Law Enforcement. Strange rule, but that is the way I have understood it for years. I've got some myself, and at 1 time had close to 3K of this stuff, all Portugese or Israeli mfg. |
| I knew individuals could posses and sell but I did not think they could load it from pulled ammo as that would be "remanufacture". Thought I saw an ATF letter to the effect but I could be wrong and totally confused. Anyone know if that was answered conclusively by the ATF previously? I know someone MUST have sent a letter to the ATF asking this before. |

Avoid to take the M2 AP .30 163gr projectiles if you will reload it for a .308Win /7.62 Nato since its very long bearing surface will not stabilise in many of those rifles. The 152gr AP on the market have a much lower quality on the steel core but is much more suitable to use in the .308Win but the core tends to melt together with the steel object it hits but a M2AP projectile you can usually pull out if it does not penetrate the steel object. I would say yes, Here's a 163grn M2 AP next to an old 168grn Amax and a 180grn Sierra Match King, the 168grn Amax is only longer because it was the first generation VLD design.  163grn M2 AP is about as long as a 190grn Sierra MatchKing. My first concern for loading the 163grn M2 would be watching for signs of pressure due to large bearing surface(no boat tail on these). But Magnus and I agree, the M2 AP bullet is an excellent projectile. They have survived 300WinMag velocities and I suspect they would survive 300RUM velocities. The 7.62Nato M61 is not up to the same quality as the older stuff. |
