I haven't seen ay sort of consolidated thread on his subject but I could have missed it. If so I'll apologize after someone posts a link.

Some of the questions I was hoping to have answered in this thread I ended up researching and finding on my own. Some I wasn't sure aout though, so hopefully some of you guys can help me out. Hopefully this'll turn out to be a good enough .308 AR thread that it'll be tacked.

Which AR manufacturers produce ARs chambered in .308?
- Armalite/Eagle Arms: AR-10 series
- Bushmaster .308.
- DPMS Panther Long Range 308.
- Knight's Armament  SR-25 series.
- American Spirit Arms AS308
are the only ones I can name.

Of the .308 ARs, what kind of magazines do they accept?
- Bushmaster accepts FN-FAL mags. Any others?
- Armalite makes/sells their own mags and I want to say thet will accept converted M1A/M14 mags.
- DPMS makes/sells their own 9, 10, and 20 round mags. The 9 rounder is "a polymer with a waffle design for added strength. Has see-through construction similar to the Styler Aug Magazine." They also accept the Knight's Armament magazines.
- Knight's Armament makes/sells their own 5, 10, and 20 round magazines.

I have seen a .308 AR that had the mag release bolt down by the mag well... anyone know which make this was? I think it might have been the DPMS, but it's hard to tell by looking at theit web page though.

Based on what I've read it seems like the Bushmaster .308 might be a pretty good pick since mags can be gotten for so cheap (compared to a $55 Armalite mag). That's just my opinion though. Either way magazine seems to be the main difference between all of these rifles. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I just bought the Bushmaster 308 and as you mentioned they take the FNFAL mags. I was pleased to find out that it does not matter if the mags were made for the "inch" or the "metric" FAL. they both fit and work well. I was able to find them in 5 round for hunting use, and 10 round for shooting from a bench. The mag release is in the usual position, and, is ambi. The bolt release is at the bottom of the Mag well in the back. Regards

That might actually be what I am thinking of... either way they are closer to the trigger finger which IMHO is cool.

KAZ.... is there any chance you could take a picture of that... it'll kind of clarify what I'm talking about to those that are even less familiar with this rifle than me. Thanks in advance.

Also... I didn't see any on their web page but does Bushmaster make their own .308 mags? They usually include a mag with their rifles so I'm wondering if they do this with the .308 or if they just figure you'll stock up before you even get the rifle.

The bolt release is at the back of the mag well so that when your finger is in the proper position along side the trigger it is easy to release and then your finger is beside, but, not in the trigger guard. It is ambi, and, at first I was irratated that they moved it from the "standard" position until I saw how natural it felt in use. The Jan/Feb issue of S.W.A.T. mag has it as the cover story and they did their usual great job on the pictures. They really liked the ambi controls. The rifle came with one 20 rd mag that looks just like the new ones I bought at $10 each. The mags are so easy to insert and will drop free, very fast.  Regards

I don't know why more AR makers don't make their rifles ambi.
I really wish they would move the bolt release on the .225/5.56mm ARs as well. I have one of those bolt release extensions on my XM-15 and it's nice, but a little awkward locking the bolt to the rear. How is locking the bolt with the one you're talking about on the mag well?

pathfinder74,

Find more pics and a review HERE.

Here's a pic of the ambidextrous mag release and bolt catch/release (at the bottom rear of the mag well:

Cool picture... that is what I was talking about. I corrected the original post to say bolt release instead of mag release.

Anyone know what other .308 ARs are set up like that?

Should be up now.

Just thought of another question that someone might be able to help me with.

Do they make flash suppressors for .308 ARs yet? Or can you only get comps at this point?

Here's a pic of a Vortex Flash Hider from Smith Enterprises on my BAR-10:

It is threaded 5/8-24 which seems to be the standard for .308 muzzle devices.

DPMS also has a Phantom-style flash suppressor for the .308 (See MartytW's thread HERE for pics).  I have ordered one,but don't have it yet.

I am currently using an OPS, Inc. 4-port muzzle brake with excellent results.

Basically, any muzzle device threaded 5/8-24 with at least a .30 cal hole should fit on the end of a BAR-10 barrel - or any other .308 barrel threaded 5/8-24.

Did Fulton Armory ever start producing a 308?  They showed a prototype somewhere that was discussed on this board a few months ago.

Here's a little tidbit of info--DSC also has one in the works. (Parent company is J&T Dist)  No idea when it's coming out, but if they're anything like the quality of their AR15s, I'll be buying one immediately!

I'm also using a Vortex fs on my DPMS 308 because they were the only ones who made one right after the ban ended...when I bought it, I was thinking that it's the ugliest thing I could imagine, but beggars can't be choosers.  I learned the other day that DPMS now has an oversized Phantom copy for sale now...can't remember the part number, but it's here on the variants forum (thread title is something like .458 f/s)

here's the thread for the Phantom f/s

I'd talk to Tony from TROMIX.  Tromix

He has some VERY nice MB and FH he makes custom for various rifles. He just threaded my .50 Beowulf barrel to 3/4-24 and bought both the A1 style FH as well as the Sledgehammer version of his MB.

I looked on Fulton's page but didn't see one. Not to say I might have missed it. Their website isn't very intuitive.

Don't know about any others. I pretty much searched all of the major manufacturers names I have in my favorites and the ones I listed above were the only ones I found in .308. I'm sure I missed one though. I'm kind of surprised Colt and RRA don't have one.

Thanks for the input on the FS. I'll have to look around and see if I can find any others. I didn't really think about it in my initial search.

Word from Walt Kuleck is that they hope to introduce their "FAR-10X" early next year. The picture of the prototype is the last one in the slide show on their home page;

Good news:  That looks like a FAL mag

Bad news:  The bolt catch/release looks recessed and might be hard to activate under stress?

In any event, competition in the .308 semi-auto market is all good.
