I just finished my 1st 1200 yard match with my .308 DPMS, 24" SS bull bbl.  The gun could have been competitive (no I would not have won, but I could, maybe, have finished mid pack against the bolt guns) except that the factory trigger is not real good...in fact it is REAL bad.  I really needed a clean break at about 2.5 pounds and my factory trigger creeps and jumps to the break at about 8 -9 pounds.

My Question:
Since I'm pretty new into the semi game; will a AR-15 drop-in competition trigger system work in the .308 DPMS lower?  I see the JP's, Timney, Jewell's.  There are all triggers I know from my bolt guns.  I know that this has been asked before but for some reason my search feature is not working right now and I don't trust a Google search.

Thank you all,

Yes standard AR triggers will work. I have a CMC drop in trigger in my DPMS 308 and for $130 or so it has been great.  I'm waiting on a Geiselle hi-speed match trigger for my .260 AR which I should have this week. Everything I've read about the Geiselle trigger points to it being one of the best.

ETA:  what are the specs on the ammo you were shooting at 1200?

I put a LMT 2-stage in my LR-308 and love it. I didn't have to "fit" it either like the Rock River ones and the price is good.

I've got the DPMS in 308 and 260, and I feel your pain.  The triggers are terrible... I have RRA NM triggers in both of mine now, and I'm quite happy.  I had a Timney single stage in the 260 for a few months, but I wasn't a fan.  It was very crisp, but I prefer the two stage for target shooting.

If you are going to spend the money and get an aftermarket trigger, get the Geiselle and be done with it.  That's what I'm sticking in my match rifle in the next month or two.

Im a Fan of the Geissele for sure, but put a Wilson Combat in mine to try something different. Its very good, 2 pin drop in.

Thanks to all who replied!

Here are a few answers to the above question:

]All the participants were using .308's; the second flight of shooters were in the .338 Lapua and larger class.  I was the only semi. This was my first 1200 yd competition and while I have been practicing out to the 500 yard gong I had some difficulties when we hit 800 and beyond.  It was all shooter error.  I didn't have enough time on the trigger before the shoot.  The BDC in the scope was fine and spot on at the ranges I was practicing at.  They didn't hold true past the 700 mark and I was forced to use some Kentucky Windage.  I did not have my turrets on the scope or I could have made some adjustment on the zero but time between shoots was tight so I just went with the flow.

I had some feeding issues.  I had loaded these rounds after a full case prep but I did not have my Small Base dies then (I do now), the first round didn't always set in the chamber but the 2nd round in the mag and all the ones after (except for two) did feed.  The bolt guys just cam'ed theit rounds into the chamber with the bolt.  e can't do that with semi's.

I was using the Nosler 168 Target J-4's.  I also sent some 175's down range.  We semi guys are limited in our OAL....not so the bolt guys.  The BC on the 168's is in the mid .450's.  One guy was shooting 208 gr bullets with a BC of about .600....wow!  They can easily single feed, it is tough for us to do that.  All of my 168's were loaded with a moderate load of Varget, CCI 200 primers with the max OAL that I could get in the magazine without binding.  I have no more Varget so I'll be scrambling to get an alternate powder until the market gets back to normal.  I lucked into two pounds of 4007SSC which is a bit too slow, but may be my only options for the next moth or so.

At 1200 yards the wind came up.  I was holding 15' left of target and into the trees above just to get close...and I did.  Out of the 15 shooter there was only one hit at 1200.  I did have hits at 1000 (one of five shots) and one at 1100 yards (all luck!).

Anyway, the bolt guys kicked my butt.  They had computers setting out, charts and electronic wind gauges.  They were pretty serious.  The guy to my right was upset that a few of my rounds landed on his shooting pad.  I'll bring / build a screen for the next shoot.  I spent last night at the bench prepping brass, I'll be back there!

Bill;
The primary or go-to trigger  with top level AR shooters is the Geissele 2 stage match trigger.  It is expensive.  And worth it.
I have a DPMS LR 308B with the 18" bull barrel with a JP trigger, also a personally built .223 AR with the Geissele
2 stage match trigger.  The difference is significant.  The Geissele is far superior in feel, controllabilty and consistency.
I and several fellow shooters have commented that the Geissele almost reads your mind on its break.
As far as your goal for 1000 yds + with a .308, I  suggest finding yourself a single round loading device for your DPMS.
This will allow you to use the 175 grain bullets and single load them. Thus make yourself more competitive with those
folks shooting those antiquated manual bolt type rifles.  I do this with my .223 and the 77 grain Hornady A max bullets.

Good luck
Roger

Thanks Roger!  I didn't know that they made a single round loading device.  Once I get this game figured out I fully intend on giving those bolt guys a run for their money.  The gun is capable that is for sure.  I've shot competition in IHMSA fro the last 15 years and loved the Ultra-IHMSA shoots (single shot pistols to 485 meters) .

I'm a noob in the 3-gun and 1000+ yard stuff...and new in the AR format; but I'm learning!

Great info,

Great Idea!  With the BoB Sled I load the longer bullets and not be limited by OAL.

Thanks,

I have had CMC, JP, Jard, Gisselle, RRA Match (by White Oak Armory)...currently have a Timney in my RRA 308 and it is good, but..... I have an AR Gold in my AR15 build, and in my humble opinion, it is the best of them all.  I shoot a lot of 3-gun with the RRA, but with my AR15 the Gold is the only trigger that I can get to break exactly when I want.  Now I find that American Trigger Company makes what they call the SR Gold for the big ARs, so I'm going to be $280 poorer shortly.

The one thing I don't know is the "Gold" durability in the long run.

Oh, and I use the RRA LAR-8 Predator in F-Class and long-range matches as well as 3-gun and usually finish mid-pack or so in our neck of the woods...depending on how the wind is blowing.  Certainly no fault of the rifle (consistently 1/2 to 3/4 MOA).
