| Is the board down again? I've been getting an error message for 2 days. |
Where are you located in TX. Just got my SOCOM :) |
I have some sabots loaded by I THINK Marty with 77 grn SMK and one other load.... the sabot hit the paper target at 25 yards, so funny. |
Those were custom jobs and turned out to work best as NON discarding sabot for CQB work .... Now, the Barnes 45 cal muzzle loader sabot with the 190 gr DPX bullet will actually load QUITE well in the SOCOM and cycle the action - fellow ARFCOMMER was at the range when we tested them. You can get those sabots from MMP and substitute your own 40 cal bullets .... most of them will not like the velocities to which you will be driving them, but who cares, right?

Now that sounds like it would extend the effective range of the SOCOM for deer, yes? I just put myself into debt for a year to my wife when I got my 6.8SPC. I don't need this temptation! |
And IIRC, the SMK hit the paper sideways. Had a perfect profile cut out of a 77 gr SMK. THAT was funny. |
It was funny was it not! We should have taken that target home... Ah those were the good days were they not? |

Ok since the forums are down.. and seems like there are a few of us looking at this thread... I have a ? Shot mine Sunday and went to clean it... Look like the brass is scratching up the upper on the deflector... is this normal? Or is there a way to adjust the extractor? Only shot 20 rds through it. |
Brass marks on the deflector are normal, not to be worried about, won't harm the rifle, etc. That's what the deflector is supposed to do, redirect the spent brass. All is well. If you worry about the marks on the deflector, don't. It shows you actually shoot your rifle. You should see some of mine... even the Duracoat is wearing off, because it gets used. There was a post in AR15 discussions started by Mark LaRue asking for pictures of your well-worn, beat up, scratched up, etc rifle... |
Thanks.. and thanks for a great round.. |
There testing things... needless to say its not ready yet. I will post in the thread when it is ready to go. I miss the site too trust me, it was one of the best technical discussion sites around I feel. Regardless of whether the topic was 458 SOCOM related or not, the vast diversity of members made it great plus the usual thought provoking ctg's from the likes of Marty and others always made it fun too!

| I have had my Upper about three months got the extraction and feeding problems worked out finally needed new mags , the bodies were worn out and the feed lips not holding the pressure of the new springs. Now I am down to less than fifty rounds of loaded ammo, and I cannot find brass, or affordable loaded ammo seems everyone is out, anyone know of a suppler who has brass in stock? |
| I wish there was more than 1 supplier of brass. Anyway, it seems that .458socomforums.com is back up...only it seems to resemble 68forums.com a bit. Ok a lot. In fact, all the threads and posts and everything seems to have been copied over from 68forums instead of 458socomforums...oh well at least the webmaster is trying. |
|
Ok just got on the new and improved? 458 Socom forum last night it seems to be all about the 6.8, while that is an interesting round and one I may look into more later. How do you get to the 458 part of that forum if anyone knows? I did not have a lot of time last night to brows much but it did not seem like there was much if any SAocom stuff. Right now my Internet time is limited I am in the middle of remodeling my house *started with the kitchen, then the wife thought oh the livingroom.... yea you married guys get the picture) Any how this is cutting in on my load development, plus the absence of avalible brass. I gain a lot by just peruseing a forum dedicated to the 458S. |

Blind, According to the threads, Cold told his web folks to make the 458 Forum look like the 6.8 forum, and they took him lterally. Cold's last mention indicated that he going to have to give them one more crack at getting it right. I would likely not post there, as anything is likely to be nuked one more time. Guessing here is still best for now. Not to mention we still have to keep our guard up for those 450B folks , so posting here is good. If things go like they usually do on ARFCOM, and the number of folks that are using each continues to grow, we ought to be able to get a few threads going to rival the 6.5 v. 6.8 debates.![]() Looks like some 450B reloading data is now becoming available from Hornady, so we will have lots to discuss. I am predicting a very bad situation for some very big game this year, an lots of stories to cuss and discuss over elk and venison chops this winter.Looks like Marty is "leaking" some potentially good news. I think the brass problem is that Starline is still backed up. The last run, not long ago was pretty much sucked up. I honestly hope that there is more brass soon, as the big game season is right around the corner. A bright spot is that I have been sending out lots of reloading data to the folks, so we ought to have lots of traffic and catching up to do once the forum is operational. Craig |

Even with the 458 site down, the good news is that Marty, Cold, Bearb, and others are here and putting out good information and answering questions. Me, personally, would be seriously stuck without them in terms of reloading data. Yeah, it sucks that the site is down, but at least we have a work around in the meantime. |
Thanks for the support You 458 SOCOM guys are so helpful that I'm going to follow yall to the 458 forums when they are back up and pester yall there. I hope before anyone shoots big game with a 450b hand load that they are sure of the terminal ballistics of the bullet they are using!!! |
Careful! We have Moderator Power there |
| I welcome any and all to 458 SOCOM forums, it has some of the best tech talk around, psh theres people on there without a 458 SOCOM but they post in the Wildcat section where most of Marty's zany concoctions come to be, or at least are discussed at length. Its a great learning place too and like this site almost everyone is very friendly and helpful. |

Not back up and nothing is on it. I haven't been a regular on that site for all of this year because of site problems. Just got tired of dealing with it. The good news is that after a delay of... oh... let's just say more than we planned on, I picked up my Teppo Jutsu custom upper from Marty on Thursday. As soon as the site is up and running I will post photos and tell about the pick up. I love when a plan comes together and it turns out like you envisioned. From the few test shots I was able to fire, the .458S is all that I hoped it would be. Range report will follow - when I get time. I don't know when that will be exactly... work is tough lately, but I will post when I can. Mark |
