Hey all,
So I'm putting together an AR pistol build in .45 ACP, and I would appreciate some input on what I've got so far. I also have a couple questions, as I'm not thoroughly versed in some of this stuff. Olympic Arms K45 upper w/ barrel cut down to 8.9" CNC Guns AR45 lower LaRue Tactical 9" free float quad rail Magpul AFG Troy Industries back up sights Aimpoint Micro and LT mount Law Tactical folding stock adapter Phase 5 Tactical hex pistol buffer Sig Sauer pistol brace Magpul MS3 sling Magpul MOE-K2 Battle Arms ambi safety selector One thing I was curious about is if anyone knows what kind of muzzle devices are available for the K45's barrel. I would really like one like a KX3 if at all possible. My main purpose for this build would be home defense. I figure having a short AR platform with a powerful pistol caliber that has less of a chance of over penetration is a win/win for me, since I'm so familiar with the AR. I would also like to find out if a UMP-45 magazine coupler would work for Grease Gun mags. So what do y'all think? Any ideas, suggestions, improvements? EDIT: So after taking another, closer look at the K45 upper, it looks like I will be needing a different, flat top upper. Does anyone know if a standard AR upper would be able to take the barrel? And if M4 feed ramps would actually prevent .45s from feeding properly? |
Contact Ron Williams RMW Xtreme here on the boards. I picked up 2 of his grease gun lowers and have built one as a pistol and they run great. My upper is also from RMW and is di and Ron's 100%. not sure you will find a kx3 fore it but Ron may be able to come up with something

The CNC lower does not have the ej built in. Also may want to do a little research on the CNC lower. Mags require squeezing to fit & prying the feed lips open to get the rounds up high enough to feed properly.
With my GG lower all that is required is the mag catch cut. I supply a mag with the lower for those wanting to duplicate or I cut suplied mags for free with lower. Whatever works best for you. |

Thanks everyone, especially Ron, for the advice, and also, sorry for posting in the wrong section. My bad.
I guess wanting to go for the CNC lower was mostly because I wanted it to work so bad - I liked it so much because the magazine well actually fit the GG mags, instead of having to use a block. What little I did read suggested that there were hardly any problems when mated with the Olympic Arms upper. Ron, your upper definitely looks 100% better than the OA upper. For future reference, would you build a .45 upper with an 8.9" barrel? And what kind of options would there be for muzzle devices? As I said before, I'd kinda like something close to a KX3. Do you know of any that would work? |

IM me if I can help. |
| There is nothing I would love more than to order one of those right now, in addition to the custom upper. Unfortunately financial constraints are pretty tight right now. But you can bet you'll be hearing from me as soon as I get some extra money. Excellent work! |

Nice work! Solidworks? Did you model everything from scratch or are some standard AR part models available somewhere? |

Yep I'm on it half the day at work, but I've got it on my laptop at home for personal stuff. The upper and lower started as parts from CNCGuns, but i could recreate them with the prints I have. |

The CNC lower works with the USGI mags just fine, the new production ones can be an issue apparently (I have 24 USGI so I never bought any of the new production).
The "squeezing" you read about is only if needed for the particular magazine not all and only to square up the magazine. I've never had to tamper with the feedlips. For a flash hider I drilled out an Armalite .308 A2 (5/8-24 thread) flash hider to 0.500. You could probably do the same on a KX3. |
| every time i think i have the funds to get ron to build me an upper something fails round the house. yesterday my water softener died. as is the life of a poor knife maker :) i will by god have one built one of these days tho and hope to get one of his GG lowers to match |

Not all GG mags need to be squeezed to fit the CNC lower. USGI mags usually fit without squaring the mags but the Keep Shooting mags seem to require a little more squaring of the mags. Takes less than a minute if needed. It's a non-issue. I'd have to agree.....I have all the versions of the CNC lower form the khlan ?SP to the Thompson Machine era and those that Justin finished as 100% receivers.......and a large number of GI and Keep shooting mags.......all my guns run great.......and I have my DI uppers and even an Olympic K-45upper.....not a big deal on the mags. Bottom line.....we are shooting a round in an lower with an upper that was never designed for a short fat pistol cartridge.....a certain amount of adjustment is to be expected...... |

I found the GI mags to actually be tighter than the KS mags in my lower. |

Tweaking GG mags in a vice or cutting mag catches in the GG mags. Both lowers have advantages and disadvantages. Both issues are minor and both lowers work. Not all GG mags need to be squared to work in the CNC lower. If the mags don't fit it's because the mags are not square. YMMV.
I like the fact the end user has options. Just not big on dissing one to sell the other. |
