OK. I am ready to order Spike Tactical's 22lr upper. It got me to thinking though about other pistol caliber AR-15 uppers. I see Spike has one in 9mm. Olympic Arms has them in 9mm and 45ACP. I reload in both calibers. Which is more fun, reliable, useful, accurate, etc? Do any of them have down sides that I am not thinking about? I know if i go with 45acpo I would choose Olympic Arms since Spike doesn't make it in that caliber. If I went with 9mm, which would be a better choice? Thanks!

Both, naturally!
Actually, I built a Cav Arms/Oly 45 about 3 years ago ( maybe 2, I forget)
Since you reload, ammunition expense isn't as big a deal for you.
In .45 the easiest way to go is oly, or was.
Oly isn't building .45s except to order due to lack of available mags. Their .45 mags were converted Uzis, a now cost prohibitive item.
If you call, they will build it if things haven't changed.
Options for a lower include a milspec lower with a Hahn/Sten mag block( there's a current thread); Sten mags can be adapted with only a little lip massage.
Cavalry Arms lowers use a different Hahn mag block and M-3 Grease Gun mags, still available (new production) from Keepshooting.com. The CavArms lower REQUIRES an 8oz or heavier buffer for .45.
There are other milled aluminum lowers dedicated for GG mag use.

Now there is a direct gas impingement upper which may keep the upper cleaner, and would probably be nicer for suppressor use. No experience here.

.45 AR is a lot like .22, except the plates move a LOT more.

Use of .45 Super loads and and an even hotter round with which I'm not familiar is an option.

See Tangochaser's sticky.

9mm is either Colt system or Oly. No experience, but for Oly, the best option is probably the Hahn/Sten  setup with unmodified mags. The more expensive option is modified mags ( a block welded on the back of the Sten mag) preserves the .223 AR manual of arms with regard to the mag release.

Neither Oly system provides for the bolt locking open on an empty mag.

.45ACP gains almost no velocity in a 16" barrel, 9mm can get a substantial gain.

I would try the DI45 Very low recoil. The video says it all. DI45

I would like the 45 but it is all about the mags––––––-

Hot setup if you can find one is the flatop Oly 9mm set up for glock mags (different lower) .

Glock mags are easy to find, easy to load ,can serve dual purpose if you own a 9mm glock and can be had in short lengths for prone and bench use or as large as a 33 rounder.

In case of any future mag bans there will be a load of pre bans (who doesn't have at least one 9mm glock?)

I would love to see Oly get together with Blackdog and come up with a 45acp package

No great love here for Oly but their pistol uppers are really very nice , My 9 has been great but the sten mags I have are a PITA to load. A 45 would be great if mags were not such an issue

The mags for the 45 are not that bad. I use GG mags I convert to work with my magblock & the ARs mag catch. Quite slick.

The pps43s work also but are linited to 15rnds.

How much do you pay for that? What kind of bolt does it use? Would it work w/ GG mags? I have a Cav lower that I want to make into a 10.5" .45 version of this:

And a DI45 sounds like a cool project.
