I want to say that someone was making uppers in .50AE some time back, maybe Tromix?  Anyway, does anyone know what they were using for a magazine?  Also, was it gas or blowback?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it was Tromix. It uses a standard AR magazine with a flat follower and an insert fastened inside the front of the magazine to keep the rounds from sliding fore and aft.

Very unique little gun, to say the least.

Just out of curiosity, why in the hell weren't these more popular?

It was gas operated

Beats the hell out of me. Maybe it was just too early for a sorta bigbore AR platform? As I understand the timeframe, at the time Tony Rumore was pretty much the only game in town for stuff like that. If my memory is correct he built the Sledgehammer ARs in .50AE, .440CorBon & .458SOCOM as well as several other custom calibers.

Would a blowback version just beat the weapon too badly?

Maybe someone should try the 50GI. It will fit in .45 mags so any of the .45 conversions could be used.

Plus emptying a magazine of .50 GI would certainly make me quit bitching about the price of .45 ACP.

The 50 GI is going to be my first project when I get the MGI GG magwell (45acp will be the second) I am hoping to do it as a gas gun or piston?

I don't know about how badly blowback vs gas operated would beat up the weapon, but I do have a M93B that auto-collapses now after about 100rds of .50AE.

Do any of you reload 50ae for an AR platform?

I tried a few loads, but I think I am using a powder that burns too fast because it doesn't cycle the action.

It's not the gun, because factory loads work fine.

H110 or Win296 is powder of choice.  Lil Gun should work too.

I shoot my AE upper more than I do the .458.

The popularity was low due to the price of ammo. Not many folks wanted to spend a buck a round for factory ammo when 5.56 USED to be  cheap.

Has anyone ever managed to confirm how many SledgeHammer ARs were built by Tony Rumore / Tromix and in what calibers?

I use lilgun in the 50AE.(Loading disclaimer here) 29g behind a sierra 350g HP will produce 1730fps in a Tromix 16.5" tube. The same load behind the 334 Ranier FP is a great practice load & 32g with the 325g Speer HP. Please use standard LP primers with these loads.

Tony has posted his tally a couple of times, it should be in the archives
