18" Barreled AR-15. Generally 200 yards or less, occasionally 300 yards, possibly 500 at a later time. Probably going to be shot from a bench most of the time, at a range.

Are there any better or even comparable options than this?

This one looks pretty decent, and I like Leupold. I dont' think it's FFP though...

Well for 500 yards or under

Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 for $599... Although im sure that scope could help you touch out further than 500

The SWFA SS 3-15x42 is also a great option. It and the 3-9 are much better scopes than the patrol for what you are doing.

ETA: You can find the 3-15 on the sample list for $600(demo).

Go with the Leupold VX-R 3-9x40mm Patrol.  I don't know why you'd want FFP, especially if you are going to do most of your shooting at shorter ranges.

I really like my Patrol.  The advantages I see over the other you are looking at are:

1.  Lighter weight.

2.  Shorter.

3.  Much more compact and lower turrets.

4.  Really great ILLUMINATED center dot reticle with motion detection circuitry to activate the dot and which will make the battery probably last for years with normal use.

5.  Made in USA with a lifetime warranty from a company that has been in business for a very, very long time.  I'm 63 years old and have many scopes of different brands.  Some of my Leupold scopes are Vari-X.  Look it up -- over 40 years old.  Still as clear as when new.  Only "failure" I've ever had was my fault.  My horse stumbled and fell on the scabbard sheathed rifle and scope, damaging the eyepiece of the scope. Horses are heavy and the ground was rocky.  Even though it was my fault, Leupold  fixed it for free.  I was honest and they didn't have to do that.  All I paid for was postage.  If it had been their fault, they would have covered that, too.

I don't know what the SWFA reticle looks like when the scope is turned down to 3x, but many FFP reticles get very tiny and hard to use at low power, which is needed for close range use.

SWFA is a good company, but I don't know where they will be 20 years from now.  My bets are that Leupold will still be in Beaverton, Oregon taking care of their customers.

BTW:  The Leupold dot is .3 milrad in size, which is 1.2 MOA, and it can be turned off completely if you don't want to use it.

I just got the SWFA 3-9x and it is amazing!!!!! sits in an American Defense QD mount on my AR. You will find many used Leupold Patrol scopes for sale on swfa and ebay, but not too many swfa 3-9x scopes pop up.

How is the illumination?  Just kidding.  Most of my scopes don't have it either, but it is a nice plus for a tactical scope and fantastic for use in low light.

Used Patrols on eBay?  I doubt it, but if there are some, I would expect their sales volume is what, maybe 100 times more than SWFA?

I guess I need to check that out.  I would want to pick up another.  Would love to get a good deal on their 1.24-4x20mm Patrols for another build.

FWIW it's a friend I am helping with a build. I currently own an SWFA SS 3-9x42. I like it, but it's really big, bulky, heavy. And sometimes the eye relief isn't the best. It's also not that great on 9x, but that is probably to be expected.

Oh, and Super Sniper scopes have been made for 10 or 15 years now...

Fact check:  I just checked both eBay and SWFA's websites.

SWFA:  No used or Demo Patrols for sale.  Not even demos.  And the Leupolds they do list are priced very high, reflective of their residual value.

eBay:  No used Patrols for sale.  Every eBay posting I could find were for NEW scopes.

It is helpful to be accurate.  Many used for sale?  How about NONE?

Of course, this can change, and anybody can put anything up for sale, but I didn't find any used Patrols.

In your defense, the Patrol series of Leupold's VX-R line is pretty new.  But if there were problems, you'd think there would be used ones for sale.

This. I have one (mil-mil), and really like it. It currently resides on a 10/22, and works well even on a rimfire.

You seem to have a lot of knowledge of LEUPOLD scopes. Do you work for Leupold, or are you affiliated in any way?

We've already asked that question and it was denied. Even thought 90% of the posts say otherwise.

I have nothing to do with Leupold.  I do like most of their products.  I do not like their Delta Point reflex as currently designed.  Nor an I really crazy about their Redfield line, which is not of the quality level of the real Redfields I own from when it was its own company in Colorado before having its name bought by Chinese and now Leupold.  I have similar feelings about Leupold's Rifleman series, which I do not consider to be true Leupold.  I presently own the following optics, in no particular order, and have a number of examples of many of them collected over four decades or so.  I may be leaving something out:

Zeiss
Kahles
Leupold
Pentax
Burris
Nikon
Weaver
Lucid
Redfield
Tasco (yes, took my first deer with a cheap 4x as a teen, and keep it to remind me to be humble)

If MS556 works for Leupold, the Vortex payroll must be huge! I see the same names touting the same optics daily... Just means they found something they like, no kickbacks needed

--Well I had one and it had problems with illumination flickering and sent it in to Leupold ( fantastic by the way as far as customer service). I received my scope back and it worked great but I ended up selling it to a friend and got SWFA. The leupold had great glass and some cool features, I just prefer the SWFA.

I'd like to offer you a suggestion prior to your purchase,... I purchased the LEU113771  Leupold 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol 30mm Riflescope this morning from SWFA. Prior to my purchase I shopped around for a few days on the internet and found a better price so I filled out the 110% SWFA price guarantee form and after receiving a confirmation email with coupon code I ordered the scope, A.R.M.S. scope rings, sunshade and anti-reflection device. ONE CAVEAT,...  I received more than an $80.00 off the price of the scope with the discount from filling out the low price guarantee form but I wasn't given an opportunity at checkout to enter the code so after completing my order I sent them an email notifying them of this issue. I realized after going back to the item and adding it to the shopping cart again, just to see what went wrong on my end, that's when I realized there was an opportunity to enter your coupon code upon adding your selection to the cart. I'm sure they'll make it right as I've heard many times how good SWFA'S service is from all the posts here on ARFCOM so I'm not worried but I'll post an update on that detail later. If I were you I would price shop and fill out the $110% Low price guarantee...!!! Out of respect for SWFA I'm not going to divulge the identity of lower price dealer. You'll have to do your own research on that. Good luck!
