This project (the SR-47) is rather interesting. From what little I know here is a backgrond of the project. Socom asked two vendors, KAC and Robinson Armament to create a drop on upper reciever in caliber 7.62x39mm, for use on M4 lower recievers. The idea was that SF operators working behind enemy lines, alongside opposition/resistance forces (such as the northern alliance) would be able to use their AK ammunition/magazines,in their M4's, but would still retain the superior egronomics and modular capability of the M4. This would eliminate the need for ammo resupply drops, which can be a very dangerous part of any operation. Furtermore magazines retrived from dead enemy soldiers or abandoned positions could be utilized. This was a great idea but, creating a add on device that could accept an AK mag was not possible without permanently altering the M4's lower reciever. It appears that SOCOM did not wish to alter their M4 lowers, but failed inform the vendors of this. KAC & RA submitted complete rifles for evaluation. SOCOM rejected both based on the fact that the lowers were not compatable with M4, which is not possible. From what I hear KAC has no plans to mass produce this weapon for either civilian or government sales. VT |
