I built a carbine recently and I want an optic. I shoot within the 100 yard mark and 90% of the time within 70 yards. I think an Aimpoint CompML3 on a Larue LT129 mount with a troy BUIS would work best for what I need but Acogs look really cool and I like the reticles (I have looked trough a TA31F-G and a TAO1NSN). For those using acogs, do you pic up the reticle about as quick as a red dot? I need opinions on what to buy. thanks

Just buy the Aimpoint.  You don't need a magnified optic for 100 yards or less.

ACOG's are indeed fantastic, but for the conditions which you describe, and Aimpoint would be more appropriate.

Fighting Carbine Optics

I have the TA11 ACOG for extended range and bad eyes.

During our last pistol shoot, I busted out my 6920 and assassinated the target at 10 meters. Given the short range, I aimed high. 20 rounds center mass, 4-5" group w/ a few wild ones. Anywayz, I haven't used a red dot for close encounters, but the TA11 with the long eye relief gave me no problems.

I have read that before but I`ll read it more carefully here in a second. How much longer is the eye relief on the TA11 than the TA31F?

Enough to make the difference between a most wonderful device, and one that is unfortunately not quite so wonderful for some folks despite its broad use.   The EP is also bigger; the 11 ACOG's are very bright SOB's in reduced ambient light circumstances!

I run an 11F on my most favorite AR, and am currently trying to locate and 11J for another one.

11 series FTW.

ETA - I also run a T-1 on the "most favorite", but use the ACOG most of the time lately since I have been doing more distance shooting at 2-400y versus CQB drills.

I read the entire fighting optics thread and have decided to go with the Type 1 optic.

I will go with the following:
Aimpoint CompML3 w/LaRue LT129 QD mount
Aimpoint 3x Magnifier with LaRue FTS mount
Troy Folding Rear BattleSight

This is what will suit me best.

That sounds like a pretty good combination, but you might want to also consider saving the magnifier $$$ towards a future ACOG.

In my mind, magnifiers are a band-aid rather than a solution, and are also "overpriced" for a device without a reticle..  Magnifier + M/ML series = heavy.... and sliightlly less KISS.  The M3/LT-129 is currently on my most reliable system for unlikely HD.

I am a very indesicive person. I still keep going back and forth between CompML3 and TA31F-G

Aimpoint in close, ACOG when you need to put the bullet in a very specific location up close (300m) and a torso at 600m.

As usual, you sammi hits may vary.

Can you mount a mini red dot to the ta11?

Should I stick with my 1/9 twist 16" hbar upper and put an aimpoint on it, or get an LMT or BCM 16" M4 profile or middy upper?

Yes.

I like the TA31F but people who aren't ntch shooters sometimes don't like the eye releif.

If you want an optic for the type of shooting you described in your original post the aimpoint is the way to go IMO

Aimpoint for the win

Ive been useing a ML2  for over 8yrs  now
I use a Larue mount and a LMT D2000 m4 .  ( MY GO TO carbine )

if I can spot a TIN CAN at the berm 220Y I can nail it.
more than enough accuracy!

Most SHTF shots will be up close
way under 100y

I wouldnt even buy a magnifier
I would rather just buy a Meopta R1 Kdot or accupoint 1-4x

On my Spare LMT M4 I run a Weaver 1-3x20mm
its for range  play only.

and  my groups  with the 1-3x aint that much smaller compared to my M4 with aimpoint ML2 & Eotech 551f

I was all googly-eyed for an ACOG when I was building, but when it came down to it, the Aimpoint was just better for the ranges you are talking about.  A flip mount magnifier (see: PoBoy) completes the package to give me that extra reach.

The only reason I want an ACOG is because they look really cool IMO. A CompML3 and a Troy folding rear sight is what will work best for me. Now I just have to decide between optic or LMT or BCM upper.

If you are going for group at 100yds the ACOG would be better but for speed the Aimpoint will work better for you.  If you work with the ACOG you can get very fast with it.  I feel ACOGS are one of the best AR15 platform scopes out there but if you are only shooting 100yds and in the Aimpoint will most likely work better for you.

For 100 or less, and 70m or less 90% of the time, the aimpoint is the better choice. At those ranges having a ACOG would be like driving a corvette and never going above 45MPH. My 2 cents, I would get a eotech before a aimpoint.

For me, it's a 4x ACOG with an offset MRD ftw.

For you, it sounds like maybe a 1-4x Accupoint would be in order.  The German crosshair with the dot, to be exact.  It's only a hair more than the aimpoint ($).

There are too many bad eotech reviews out there. This is my "go to" rifle. I want reliability and battery life.

I aint gonna scope my carbine unless its an ACOG. I guess I`m weird

I would be looking at the new RX30 Reflex. All the benefits of an aimpoint in a sight that is bomb proof and never needs batteries. They really did a good job on this one, it's as bright indoors as the old Reflex was outdoors!

How do you guys think a CompML2 would fit me? I decided to just get an Acog instead of a magnifier for when I want to shoot further/more accurately.

A CompML2 is a pretty good amount cheaper than a CompML3 and I want fast target aquisition and i think the cheaper ML2 with 4moa dot would be alot quicker. Since I decided not to get a 3x magnifier, I will run a standard LT150 mount. Opinions?

Sounds like your settling on something that you don't really want. If that's the case, look at a used aimpoint to hold you over until you can get what you really want (ACOG perhaps?)
I would honeslty just get the T-1 as it is small, light and has a better battery life than the M2 aimpoints. You will use it 90% of the time if shooting under 300 yards, plus if you get an ACOG later down the road you can always sport both like I did. I have zero regrets doing that and both serve me well.

I have been thinking of a T1. Are the lenses the same size as a CompM model? It seems to me it may be a little hard to see your dot or something.

Here is the gun it will be going on. Keep in mind that it will also be getting a Troy folding rear battlesight.

I need to do something about that hbar too

I could also get an indestructable CompM4 or CompM4s

The T-1 is a bit smaller but it is far from a problem to see. I like it better as it doesn't obstruct the FOV as much being that it is so small.

I got an ACOG first, because I found a screaming deal on a TA01B, but for my purposes, an Aimpoint would probably be better––I rarely get to shoot at anything beyond 200 yards.  I'm saving my pennies for a T1 on a Larue mount
