I just picked up a slightly used a1 upper off the EE. My question is in regards to the rear sight assembly. It appears to be the sight of an a2. it has a large aperture marked 0-2 and a smaller unmarked aperture. Are the a1 and a2 apertures the same? We have older colts at work with a1 uppers and the sights seem different?

Likely the aperture was changed out for an A2 aperture.

Lots of them were switched and the large aperture was used as an impromptu "Ghost ring" sight.

The 9mm aperture is even bigger. I believe it's the same p/n as the 'low-light aperture'.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up ordering the entire a1 assembly just in case from saw for about 35 dollars. If anything I'll throw the old part in the quickly forming parts bin.

I actually swapped the DPMS version of the A1 (no "L" aperture - two holes that look the same) that came with the new sight I added to the upper (stripped when I got it) for that A2 aperture.  I still have the A1 in my parts box if you want it, although I see I may be a little late.

I am trying to buy another C7 upper with M4 ramps now (that's how I found this thread).    If you don't need that one, please let me know.

When I first got into retro stuff, I used to swap all my A1 aperatures for the A2 variety, heck with authenticity.  I don't do it as much anymore, but then I don't shoot as much anymore either...

My M16 clone has te original aperture.  Some years back I enlrged the short range sideof the XM177 clone a bit, but the current "go to" piece; a Commando/ Israeli carbine clone has an A2 aperture; and a square front post.

Some of the current updates are, in fact, worth having

I did the same thing.  In addition to "low light", the large peeps are also good for CQB.  I think that's why many of the A2 apertures are marked "0-2" under the big peep (0 to 200 yards).  Or am I way off?

No, you're right.  The hole on the 0-200 meters settting actually ends up making the rear sight lower (the hole is lower in the center), so the bullets hit lower than the small peep.  It has a 2.5-MOA difference.  When you zero with the small peep at 300 meters, flipping to the 0-2 aperture gives you a 200-meter zero for closer targets.

See this thread for more detailed info.
