Yes. 7" is what you seek if you want to keep the fsb. That or a cutout rail. Look at the centurion c4 cutout rail if you dont know what I'm taking about. DD, Fortis and a few others make them as well.

Assuming a standard front sight base/sight tower, a 7" is correct. If you have a low profile gas block a 7" will work but will not cover the gas block.

I built a "modern" A2. It was a bit more of a PITA than I'd recommend if you try to do it my way, so take note. I bought an A2 M4 cut barrel with a pinned FSB. The FSB was a nightmare to get off, and you will need to remove it in order to install a free float tube on it. I install a YHM diamond rail, 7" carbine length. No spacing issues whatsoever. It was just a pain to build.
