I have been having trouble zeroing my S&W 15-22 at 25 yds with standard vel cci.  I found out today an interesting find.  I was using a Caldwell led sled, just because I could use it to zero.  After I tried to shoot the gun with out the sled, it was around 3 inches low, and the left to right was dead on.  I re-zeroed with out the use of a sled.  It appears to be dead on.  In the past I have had a bi pod on the front of the forearm, I am believing that this was causing the inaccuracy. I am wondering if I take the cap at the end of the stock forearm will this solve my problem?
Anyone else has had this happen to them?

I found the same thing on my 300 magnum that I hunt with.  I sighted it in on the sled, and then found that it was hitting low that caused me to miss a deer.  Can't tell you why thats the case, can only tell you that it is the case!

The S&W 15-22 are known to have the barrel nut come loose plus I've read where others have removed the front retaining ring/cap from the handguard  to help free float the barrel.   I know shooters who could throw off their POA by tightly slinging up an AR-15 so I have no doubt the polymer 15-22 could be flexing.  The 15-22's polymer receivers don't play well with extreme heat compared to aluminum.  My most accurate 22 LR AR-15 is a Gen 1 DPMS 16" Bull barrel which uses an upper without a forward assist or ejection port cover.   The heavy free floated barrel shoots good but with the right ammo it shoots very good at 50 yards.

I have had the barrel nut inspected. I think I will try removing the end cap/

+1 on what VASCAR commented... several friends have had barrel nuts loosen

The barrel nut on mine loosened up.  It was cheaper, easier, faster buying the tool online and doing it myself vs sending it back to smith & wesson
