I'm looking for something that works hand held or rail mounted, light weight, not too expensive, and adjustable for range

top of my list are:

http://www.tnvc.com/shop/elr-torch-varialbe-infrared-illuminator/
2-8 degrees focus, 7.3 oz., unknown battery life, pressure switch

http://www.lunaoptics.com/elir12.html
adjustable power up to 90mW, 0.1-5 degrees, 2.6oz (plastic housing), 6 hours advertised battery life

The luna looks more powerful but is plastic...

any input?

Prices on illuminators are ridiculous. I'm going to try using my 200mw focusable red laser that I got for $50.

I have used the torch it is a very nice unit. Battery life is around 8 hours I believe.
I ended up going with a surefire 952v has everything you need white light and ir light it is good to 150 yards or so.
While the torch is good for 200+ yards it depends if your shooting that far at night alot.

I love the 952v, As said above its the best of both worlds IR & white light in one package but the price is High. I'm going to try out the Inforce WML white - IR soon, to see how the two compare...

Yes, I looked into that and may try that also
see, eg:  http://www.batteryjunction.com/infrared-ir-p60-drop-in.html

however I am looking for something that can change beam width spot to flood as well, which a new bulb wont do
