i'm new to the whole gun world...I have about 400 rounds of ammo and i was wondering if its a crime, or does it matter if i just store ammo on the shelf of my closet??  does it really need to be in special storage?

How do they store it at the gun store you visit?

However, a $10 plastic ammo can isn't that expensive.

In NJ it is a 3rd degree felony to own ammo and store it on a shelf if you are not a gun shop. Leave it on the bedroom floor, closet floor, bathroom floor, kitchen floor, basement floor, on top of the toilet, garage floor or bottom drawer of your refrigerator.

Within 2 weeks of purchasing ammo in NJ, the state police will knock on your door and demand to see where you store your ammo. Make sure it's not stored on a shelf of any kind whatsoever.

They will shoot your dog, beat your children and have their way with your wife.

It depends. If you are talking about "is it legal" that depends on where you live.  If you are trying to "keep it fresh" a proper ammo box will be a good investment.

These 400 rounds of boolits you speak of belong in magazines in case you need to FO on a moments notice. 87 mags should cover it.

For somebody just starting to buy ammo right now, that's not to bad.

I store mine in one of my gun safes because you know, its a big investment and worth some cash. I wouldn't want someone breaking into my house and just walking off with it. Most of mine is also loaded into magazines, or on stripper clips.

Mine stays in the bottom of this cabinet.. about 1100 centerfire rounds between pistol/ shotgun/ rifle if not more.. plus my hand gun and spare ar mags / parts.

No issues so far, but when I can afford bulk 5.56.. i'll keep it in spare 50cal ammo cans.

In all seriousness. I purchased a Jobox to hold my ammunition. I did the whole closet, then storage cabinet thing. In the end, a Jobox (they sell many sizes), is quite secure because of the weight when filled. I ended up putting mine in the basement, but a smaller one would fit in a closet or storage room.

not a fed crime, but it could be depending on town/state codes. Ie it could be breaking a fire ord of a nanny city, or if a kid shoots himself with shelf ammo you might have some liability. You need to ask a more local source.

dont bother with the plastic ammo cans, i haver several from cabelas and 1 of the smaller plano plastic ammo cans. They are almost worthless when loaded with any ammo as when you pick them up the plastic lid flexes losing a seal.  I only keep some MRE's in 2 of the plastic ones with water purification and camelbak's in the other. Go with some steel ammo cans, i just got 8 light use(good condition) ones off ebay for 120 shipped free.  I saw ealier aimsurplus had them in stock for 14.50 i believe brand new (plus shipping).

Surplus 50 cal ammo cans w/ones of those rechargable silica packs if you want to store long term. Your ammo will last longer than you will.

ETA- The 50 cal ammo cans will fit 1,000rds of .223 or 9mm quite nicely.

From a technical viewpoint (since this is a tech forum) anywhere that is climate controlled (consistent cool temp and humidity) you're GTG.  The legal aspects of NJ - I have no clue, but the ARFCOM typical "send it to me for proper disposal" could possibly apply.
